Men's Cross Country Places First at Northwood Invitational

The Warriors had five runners in the top 15.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's cross country team opened the season by collecting first place at the Northwood Invitational earlier this afternoon.  The Warriors had five runners finish in the top 15.   The Warriors (30 points) were followed by Northwood (37 points), Malone (64 points), Muskegon Community College (127 points) and Mott Community College (137 points).

Pacing the Warriors were a trio of runners, who finished in the top five.  In his collegiate debut, Tyler Buchanan (Fenton, Mich. / Linden) showed why he was so highly regarded by the coaching staff, earning a second-place finish with a time of 18:42.6.

Following Buchanan were Carson Nicoletti (Shelby Township, Mich. / Utica) and Ransom Allen (Ithaca, Mich.), who finished third and fourth, respectively.  Allen has finished in the top 25 of every meet since the beginning of last season.  Nicoletti posted a time of 18:43.5, while Allen crossed the finish line in 18:48.7.

Purdue Northwest transfer Antonio Chapa (Portage, Ind.) helped the Warriors claim first by recording a time of 19:13.5.  That was good for eighth place.  Rounding out the scoring lineup for the Warriors was Zahid Salodawala (Romeoville, Ill. / Plainfield East), who came in 14th place with a time of 19:27.0.

Other notable performances came from Jack Wilson (Washington, Mich. / Romeo), who made his Wayne State debut after transferring in from Butler.  Wilson finished 16th with a time of 19:29.6.  After Wilson, Jeremy Cavallo (Davisburg, Mich. / Clarkston) crossed the finish line in 20th place with a time of 19:43.9.

FROM COACH LOFDAHL
"The men's race had a little bit of everything, which unfortunate included a couple of injuries, but our top group looked strong and executed the race plan very well. Antonio Chapa made a strong debut in a Wayne State uniform, and we liked what we saw from Zahid Salodawala and Jack Wilson. We took this as more of a workout than an all-out effort, so we expect to see big improvements in two weeks when we really start competing."

UP NEXT
The Warriors will have a week off before heading to the Lock Haven Invitational on Sept. 24.  That meet will begin at 10:00 AM.
