Men's Tennis Posts 6-1 Win at Drury

The Warriors go 2-1 in their three-day stay in Springfield, Mo. over the weekend.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (7-4 overall) concluded a three-day weekend in Springfield by downing Drury University (4-3 overall) 6-1 inside the Cooper Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon. The Green and Gold travel back home with a 2-1 mark over the three matches.

DOUBLES
The Warriors acquired the doubles point for the ninth time in 11 matches this spring season.

Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) won their eighth doubles match of the campaign together, putting together a 6-4 triumph over Sylvian Garin-Michaud and Marlon Wilken at their familiar No. 1 spot.

Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) and Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) similarly registered a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles, enough for the Warriors to earn the first point of the day.

Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) gutted through an intense No. 2 doubles match, but fell in a tiebreaker to Oscar Reis and Mark Drozdetskii, 7-6 (6).

SINGLES
WSU showed out in singles play, winning five of the six matches.

Grey defeated Wilken 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot, and has now won all five of his matches competing in that position.

Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) looked strong once again in singles action, posting a 6-2, 6-0 win over Reis at No. 5

Kelt handled Casper Otten in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The freshman won both his singles matches and had a 2-0 record (with 1 unfinished) in doubles over the weekend.

It was the first singles victory of the spring season for Spicer after missing the beginning of the campaign. He triumphed over Tjade Bruns, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot.

The final Warriors victory was nabbed by Drenth, who nearly won in two sets, but lost an 8-6 tiebreaker in the second set and ultimately earned the victory in the third set by virtue of a 6-2 win against Garin-Michaud.

Laws pushed Louka Queguiner of Drury to the brink a pair of times, but ultimately dropped two decisions by a 7-5 margin in his match at No. 4.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will receive a rematch at Indianapolis on Saturday, February 4 at the UIndy Tennis Center at 5 p.m. The Warriors and Greyhounds previously played each other on Feb. 18, a 4-2 UIndy victory.
