Men's Tennis Defeats Lawrence Tech, 6-1

The Warriors win both games played on Feb. 3 to begin the season.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad (2-0 overall) made it 2-for-2 on the day as they knocked off visiting Lawrence Tech (1-2 overall) by a 6-1 score on Friday evening inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.

DOUBLES
The same three pairings as the Northwood match earlier in the afternoon once again competed for the Warriors, who grabbed the doubles point over the Blue Devils.

Sophomore Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and junior Daniel Grey claimed a 6-1 victory from the No. 1 doubles spot.

Next, redshirt junior Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and freshman Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) grabbed a 6-3 win over the Lawrence Tech pairing of Evan Morgan and Takuya King.

At No. 3 doubles, the duo of graduate student Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and junior Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) put together a flawless effort, defeating their opponents 6-0.

SINGLES
WSU claimed five of the six singles points up for grabs in the match.

Drenth once again put together a strong showing at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-1, 6-2.

Grey won the first set over Nils Hammarsten by a score of 6-2, then needed a tiebreaker in the second set to put away the Blue Devils athlete. The result in the second set was 7-6 (5).

The Warriors kept racking up the points at No. 3 from Karcz, who also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

Kitayama defeated Lawrence Tech's Pedro Garcia-Orellana at the No. 4 spot, 7-5, 6-2. The transfer to the WSU program won both of his matches in straight sets on Thursday.

Another Warrior playing in his first regular season action on Thursday was Kelt, who was victorious over his opponent, 6-3, 6-3.

Unfortunately, Wayne State was unable to complete the sweep as junior Joe Steele (Beverly Hills, Mich.) was defeated in a heartbreaker against Thierry Luthi. Steele won 6-0 the opening, but dropped the second, 6-4. he third set would go into a tiebreaker, where Luthi was the victor, 7-6 (8).

FROM COACH MORROW
"The match against Lawrence Tech was much cleaner for us, particularly in doubles. No. 1 doubles [Drenth and Grey] played very clean and looked really good. No. 2 doubles didn't play as sharp, but were able to pull out a win. No. 3 doubles hardly made a mistake and won that match easily. In singles, Cedric looked more comfortable at No. 1. Daniel played a tricky opponent and gutted out a nice win at No. 2. Niklas looked quite comfortable and hardly made an errors. Denali found a way to win the first set and won the second set comfortably. I'm proud of the way he has been playing. Joe (Kelt) played a solid match against a solid opponent. Finally, unfortunately Joe (Steele) couldn't quite pull out the win at No. 6 in what was a heartbreaker," said head coach Bryan Morrow.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will next be tested against a Division I opponent in Toledo on the road. The match is on Thursday, February 9 and is slated to begin at noon.
