Men's Tennis Falls at Barry in Final Match of Florida Trip

The Warriors finished 3-3 in the Sunshine State.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The No. 28-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (10-8 overall) wrapped up a six-match Florida trip by falling 5-2 to No. 4-ranked Barry University (10-3 overall, 3-0 Sunshine State) on Thursday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Center in Miami Shores.

DOUBLES
The Warriors lost all three doubles matches by the same 6-3 score, allowing the Buccaneers to claim the first point of the match. 

The No. 3-ranked doubles pairing of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) fell at the No. 1 spot to Alejandro Ibanez Gallego and Arnau Rodriguez, while Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer dropped their match to the No. 48-ranked doubles duo of Alejandro Palacios and Alessandro Giuliato. 

At the No. 3 spot, Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) lost their match to Tim Buettner and Alessio Demichelis.

SINGLES
Of the first four matches to finish in singles action, Barry claimed all four to clinch the victory.  The Warriors were able to win the final two and finish on a high note. 

Winners in singles for the Green and Gold were Karcz and Laws.  Karcz handled Demichelis (6-2, 2-6, 6-2) at the No. 4 spot, while Laws was able to fight his way to a win in his match against David Rieme.  The redshirt junior won the tiebreaker (7-3) in the third set to emerge victorious, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3). 

Grey was handed a loss by the No. 19-ranked Gallego in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles position. 

Falling by scores of 6-2, 6-2 was Spicer (ranked No. 25) at the third flight. 

The Buccaneers clinched the match with their victory at the No. 6 spot.  Kitayama lost, 6-1, 7-5 to Rodriguez.

Drenth, the No. 31-ranked singles player in Division II, lost in three sets to the No. 41-ranked Palacios by scores of 6-3, 2-6, 3-6. 

UP NEXT
Wayne State will next play one week from Friday as they begin GLIAC play with a match at Ferris State on March 24.  The match will start at 10 a.m. from Big Rapids.
