GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- Paced by
Beca Vestman (Madrid, Spain / Colegio Base) tying for second, the Wayne State University women's golf team opened up the spring season with a third-place showing out of 17 teams at the SVSU Spring Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The Warriors shot a 628 (+52, 318-310), just one stroke out of second place, as the Spain native, Vestman, secured the highest finish of her career.
Vestman finished with an eight-over 152 (79-73) while improving her standing by nine spots on day two. She was joined in the top 10 by fellow Warrior,
Avery Howard (Muskegon, Mich. / Reeths-Puffer), who carded an 11-over 155 (80-75) and also bumped up nine slots in the second round. Just outside the top 10 for Wayne State was
Sabel Imesch (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) in a tie for 12th with a 12-over 156 (76-80).
The final two Warriors competing as part of the team were
Maisarah Hezri (Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia) in a tie for 39th with a 21-over 165 (83-82) and
Logan Potts (Norton Shores, Mich. / Mona Shores) in a tie for 54th with a 25-over 169 (85-84).
WSU also sent a pair of student-athletes to compete as individuals including
Orianna Bylsma (Montague, Mich. / Montague) in a tie for 57th with a 170 (+26, 90-80) and
Natalie Groom (Orangevale, Calif. / El Camino Fundamental) in a tie for 84th with a 181 (+37, 95-86).
Next up on the schedule for Wayne State is the West Texas A&M Desert Invite on April 3-4. The two-day event will be played in Tucson, Ariz. at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon.
