Men's Tennis Blanks North Carolina Wesleyan in Second Match of Florida Trip

The Warriors go two-for-two on their first day in Florida.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (9-5 overall) opened the Florida trip with back-to-back victories, shutting out Division III member and #8-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan University (3-5 overall) 7-0 on Thursday night at the USTA National Campus.

DOUBLES
The Warriors put in a solid performance in doubles action, winning two of the three contests to earn the opening point of the match.

Fresh off their ranking as the fifth-best doubles pairing in Division II, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) put forth a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 spot over Sean Keane and Diego Segovia.

Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) and partner Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) teamed up for a 6-2 triumph at the No. 3 spot.

Falling 6-3 at No. 2 doubles were the pairing of Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England).

SINGLES
The Green and Gold swept singles play to put the finishing touches on their second blanking of an opponent this spring.

Rated as the 25th-best singles athlete in the nation, Drenth backed his ITA ranking by defeating Tshepo Mosarwa 6-4, 6-2 in straight sets.

Grey pulled out a narrow 7-6 win in the first set at the No. 2 spot and claimed the second set 6-4 against Luca Knese.

The contest at No. 3 singles was a fight, as Spicer went against Vittorio Noli.  The Warrior won a close 7-6 decision in the first set before dropping the second, 2-6.  The third and final set required a 10-point tiebreaker, and Spicer was the first to that mark (10-7) to earn the point.

Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) made quick work of his opponent by winning each set 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.

Also putting in an impressive showing was Laws, as the redshirt junior claimed the victory (6-2, 6-4) in straight sets at the No. 5 singles position.

Putting the final bow on the night was Kelt, who rallied back after dropping a 3-6 decision to start the match.  The freshman showed poise and, like his teammates, was able to earn the point by notching the second set 7-5 and the final set, 6-4 against Gustavo Rivas.

FROM COACH MORROW
"It was a very competitive match against a very good team.  The match was probably the cleanest match we have played in a while and the guys really fought and battled hard.  I'm really proud of the guys and the way we competed, perhaps the best we've competed on the year in what was an overall complete match for us."

UP NEXT
Wayne State will have a challenging task ahead of itself as the team will face #2-ranked Saint Leo on Saturday at 11 a.m in Saint Leo, Fla.
