Women's Track And Field Competes At Oakland's Elaine Leigh Invite

Williams breaks school record in the triple jump.

ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Members of the Wayne State University women's outdoor track and field squad competed on Thursday and Friday at the Oakland University Elaine Leigh Invite. Eleven (11) all-time top 10 marks in school history were recorded at the meet, including senior Mikayla Williams (St. Charles, Mich.) breaking her own school record in the triple jump.

"With the GLIAC meet less than two weeks away, we needed to start building momentum, and the team did that in a big way. Oakland moved the meet up a day due to the forecast, and Thursday was beautiful. Idalia led the way with a big PR in javelin and a season-best in high jump. Teanna had a really big throw in hammer, and Izzy tossed a PR in javelin as well. Mikayla Williams had a season-best in long jump and nearly hit the 18-foot mark.

"On Friday, we dealt with rain and chilly temperatures, and performed at a very high level. Williams came back with a monster jump in triple, with four jumps over 11 meters and the last one being nearly 12 meters and a school record. Sarah had a great race in steeeplechase with over a 1-minute PR, and Kenzie had a big season-best in the 400 hurdles. Mikaela Owen had a really solid day with four good races, and Aubrey ran a 30-second PR in the 5K in the evening. Our 400 runners and 1500 runners were outstanding, with Renae, Emily G, and Bri V moving into the top-5 on our all-time lists.

"We won both the 4x100 and 4x4 relays over some excellent programs, and placed second as a team, and that bodes well going into championship season. We will continue preparing for the GLIAC meet and the coaching staff is excited to see what this group will do in May."
