Men's Tennis Posts Fourth Straight Shutout Win

The Warriors defeated Findlay 7-0 in return home on Saturday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (15-9 overall) played in its first home match since February 10, and continued winning ways by shutting out visiting Findlay (9-9 overall) 7-0 on Saturday inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.

DOUBLES
The Warriors did enough to grab the first point of the match for a fifth-straight contest by nabbing two of the three matches.

Both matches won by the Warriors were by a 6-3 margin.  At the No. 1 spot, the third-ranked duo in the nation, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany), defeated Alfredo Berlanga and Wilfredo Lara.  Playing together for the first time in the spring regular-season slate, Dom Spicer (London, England) and Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderborg, Denmark) also captured victory against the Findlay team of Octavio Carrasco and Mark Ivanov.

Falling in tough fashion were the second flight pairing of Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England).  They fell by a tie-breaking score of 11-9 to lose the match, 7-6, to Luigi Bove and Andrew Codita.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold secured all six singles points for the fourth consecutive match in their shutout effort.

All six contests were won in straight sets.  The first flight action saw Drenth, the No. 26-ranked singles player, claim a 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory over Bove, while Grey posted scores of 6-0, 6-4 in his triumph against Codita at the second position.

After not playing in doubles action, both Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) tallied victories in singles play.  Karcz won 6-1, 6-1 against Berlanga at the No. 3 spot, while Kitayama recorded back-to-back scores of 6-2 to win his match at the fifth spot vs. Carrasco.

No. 56-ranked Spicer went back into the win column for a second consecutive time, notching a 6-3, 6-3 win against Lara at the fourth flight.

Finally, wrapping up a WSU victory was Laws at the No. 6 spot, as he faced Ethan Shoesmith and notched a 6-2, 6-3 triumph.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will next play a pair of matches on Wednesday, April 12.  The squad will first host No. 19-ranked Tiffin at 10 a.m., before welcoming Ashland to town for a 4 p.m. contest.
