Women's Tennis Finishes Play at ITA Midwest Regional

The Warriors earned four doubles wins and 15 singles wins over the three-day event.

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team wrapped up the third and final afternoon of play at the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament on Monday afternoon, primarily played at the tennis courts of Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Ind.

This year's event was hosted by the University of Indianapolis.  The tournament was one of the ITA's 63 Small College Regional Championships and brought together athletes from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), and Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC).

DOUBLES
The doubles duo of Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) were scheduled to play in a consolation semifinals match against Purdue Northwest's Sienna Lopez and Alma Regina Vazquez Rioja, but that contest was not played.

Winning Flight A, the bracket in which all three doubles teams from the Warriors competed in, were Billur Gonlusen and Carolina Velazquez from Maryville University.

SINGLES
Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) was scheduled to play in a consolation quarterfinals match against Grand Valley State's Rachel Sam, but the contest was not played.

WSU had five players from Flight A to begin the tournament, but only Malak Arafat remained in contention entering Monday.  However, the sophomore fell to Benedetta Sensi from Indianapolis in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

The overall winner from Flight A was Tyffaine Pais, another member of the Greyhounds.  She defeated her teammate to claim the crown.

Gorgidze played for the overall win in Flight B, and advanced to the championship match when Katherine Earnest from Ferris State could not compete due to an injury.  That left the redshirt sophomore and Anaelle Lepinay from Tiffin to battle it out in the finals, where Lepinay was able to win 6-3, 6-2, to claim the championship in the B draw.
