Women's Fencing Concludes Weekend Competition at NFC Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Wayne State women's fencing team competed at the NFC Championships this past weekend.  The event was hosted by Brown University at the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center.  The Green and Gold fell to Wellesley (16-11), Brown (18-9), Tufts (18-9), #15-MIT (18-9), Boston College (20-7), Vassar (16-11), Wagner (18-9), and Brandeis (17-10), while claiming victory against Sacred Heart (13-12).

EPEE RESULTS
WSU found the most success in the epee weapon as the Warriors put together a 52-29 record in the category.

All three of the Wayne State student-athletes that competed in the weapon performed well, with sophomore Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary / Vörösmarty Mihály) leading the charge.  The sophomore won 20 of her 27 bouts on the weekend.

Sophomore Salma Abdrabou (Mohandessin, Egypt / Dar El Tarbiah IGCSE) and graduate student Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.) both put together a strong weekend as Abdrabou earned 19 wins (in 27 bouts), while Shevchenko registered a 13-14 record.

FOIL RESULTS
Junior Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, / Italy Liceo Linguistico Niccolò Machiavelli) put together another impressive individual performance.  The junior competed in 26 bouts over the weekend and was able to win 24.

Sophomore Noreen Bongado (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington) competed for the Warriors as well.  The sophomore claimed victory in three bouts.

SABRE RESULTS
The Green and Gold had two student-athletes compete in the sabre weapon.  Those two were redshirt senior Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower [Macomb CC]) and junior Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. Salem).  Byars earned three wins on the weekend, with Siddiqui claiming one victory.

FROM HEAD COACH ANDY TULLENERS
"This weekend was a tough weekend with very strong competition.  Four of the teams were nationally ranked.  We were also short on our women's foil and sabre squads.  The women's team had some great individual successes.  When we were collectively focused on the team, we showed our best team performance.  As we move forward into the next semester of competition, we are going to keep developing our women's team focus for better team results."

UP NEXT
The Wayne State women's fencing squad will return to action on Saturday, January 11, as they play host for the Danosi Open.
