Women's Indoor Track And Field Begins Season With Two School Records

Bastiaansen (200m dash) and Justice (5k) eclipse school marks.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's indoor track and field squad began its 2024-25 season on Friday at the SVSU Holiday Open with one school record and two NCAA Provisional marks. In addition, senior Reagan Justice became the first WSU female runner to break 17 minutes in the 5K indoor with a time of 16:47.89 at the GVSU Holiday Open.

In addition to Hanne Bastiaansen's school record in the 200m dash, four other all-time top-10 marks in program history were set in the same event. All told, 16 all-time top-10 marks in WSU history were set on Friday.

"Our sprint crew has had a great fall training block, and they came out swinging in the season opener at Saginaw Valley. Hanne Bastiaansen led the way, setting an indoor school record in the 200 to go with the outdoor 200 record that she set last spring. Sasha-Gay Thompson and Elyse Miller ran outstanding 60-meter dashes, and Megan Zahnow had a great debut in the 60 hurdles. Avery Wilson, Rachel Overgaard, and Lauren Wooten had really strong efforts as well.

"The field folks had a good day too, with freshman Olivia Findlay hitting a provisional high jump mark, and the second highest jump in program history. Nicole Warren placed in the top-five in both long jump and triple jump, and Renae Kutcha had a very solid debut in triple. Mak Stewart had an excellent day in the throws, setting new PRs in both shot put and weight throw.

"At the Grand Valley Holiday Open, Reagan Justice wrapped up an incredible semester with a school record and provisional mark in the 5K, which gives her three total WSU records now.

"As they have so often in recent seasons, our 4x400 relay squad finished the meet with an exclamation point. The team of Avery Wilson, Renae Kutcha, Kenzie Wellner, and Elyse Miller hit another provisional mark and nearly got the school record, which is rare to see in the first 4x4 of the season. In total, this was probably the best opening meet we have ever had, and the coaching staff is extremely excited for what's ahead in 2025 for these Warriors."
