Women's Tennis Shuts Out Lawrence Tech in Exhibition Match

The Warriors posted a 7-0 victory over the Blue Devils on Monday.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team won an exhibition match on Monday afternoon with a 7-0 shutout over visiting Lawrence Tech (0-4 overall) inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.

This match was scheduled for Friday afternoon, but was postponed to Monday and played to its completion.

NOTE:  This match was deemed an exhibition for the Warriors on March 29, meaning that it was not the official season opener and does not count towards the season record.

DOUBLES
The Warriors allowed just four game points to LTU across the three doubles matches, which allowed the team to claim the first doubles point of the spring slate.

Wayne State's dynamic duo of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) secured a 6-1 victory over LTU's Jacqueline Alcocer and Paola Herrera Rivera at the first flight.  Ruyssen and Komar entered the 2024 season ranked third in the nation and best in the Midwest Region in doubles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

Sophomore Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) teamed up with freshman Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.).  The tandem blanked Rafaela Tedesco and Taylor Mattingly-Harnden 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.

Another newcomer in Dessyre Obedencio (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) paired with sophomore Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) at the third position.  The team earned a 6-3 win against Miriam McCormick and Angela Anderanin to complete the doubles sweep for the Green and Gold.

SINGLES
Wayne State secured all six singles point to conclude the first match of the season on a high note.  All six contests were decided in straight sets, and the six Warriors allowed just 15 game points to their Blue Devils' opponents.

Ruyssen managed a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Herrera Rivera at her typical No. 1 spot.  Ruyssen was previously ranked 48th in the nation in singles and seventh within the Midwest.

Komar put in a perfect performance at the second position, tallying a 6-0, 6-0 win against Alcocer.  The redshirt junior was ranked 16th by the ITA in the association's rankings for the region.

Both Arafat (vs. Tedesco) and Obedencio (vs. Taylor Moore) posted back-to-back set scores of 6-2 to win their contests at the No. 3 and No. 6 spots, respectively.  Arafat came into the season as the highest-ranked Wayne State member in singles - appearing 31st nationally and fourth regionally in the lists released on November 15.

Over at the fourth flight, Szpakowska faced McCormick and won 6-2, 6-0, while Beaulieu defeated Mattingly-Harnden at the No. 5 spot by the same two set scores.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will have a quick turnaround, with its next match scheduled for Tuesday at home against Walsh University of the G-MAC.  The contest between the former GLIAC foes is slated for 1 p.m. inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.
