Women's Tennis Blanks Florida National 7-0 to Begin Three-Match Spring Break Swing

The Warriors posted their first official shutout effort of the season on Thursday.

HIALEAH, Fla. -- The third-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (7-3 overall) won their fifth match in a row with a 7-0 shutout of NAIA member Florida National (1-7 overall) on Thursday afternoon at Goodlet Park in Hialeah, Fla.

The Warriors began their annual Spring Break trip across Florida on Thursday.  WSU will play two more matches in the state.  It was the first shutout effort for the Green and Gold in 2024.

Wayne State entered the match as the third-ranked squad in all of Division II by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), only behind Barry and Nova Southeastern.

DOUBLES
WSU started the day with two wins across the three doubles contests, which was enough to garner the first point on the scoreboard.

The fourth-ranked duo of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) recorded a 6-0 victory over Fabiola Bsereni and Natalia Calvo at the first flight, while the No. 35-ranked tandem of Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) earned a 7-5 triumph vs. Nadia Abad and Vanessa Simeone at the second position.

Both pairings were nationally ranked via the ITA's new Top 50 National Doubles rankings on March 6.

Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) suffered a 6-3 setback to Karyna Krykunenko and Chiara Fiorenza at the No. 3 spot.

SINGLES
It was a sweep of singles for Wayne State, with only one match against the Conquistadors requiring a third set.

Ruyssen defeated Krykunenko 6-1, 6-0 at her usual first flight position.

A pair of Warriors managed back-to-back set triumphs of 6-2 to earn victories.  Arafat downed Calvo at the No. 2 spot, while Beaulieu handled Fiorenza at the sixth flight.

Meanwhile, Komar registered back-to-back 6-1 wins vs. Abad at the third spot.  Arafat and Komar were recently ranked 72nd and 61st, respectively, by the ITA in its Top 75 National Singles rankings, which are computerized.

Komar was also fresh off being named GLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week on March 6.

Over at the No. 5 spot, Szpakowska won 6-2, 7-5 against Simeone.

Playing for the first time in the match was Shanice Weekes (London, England) at the No. 6 position.  Facing Celeste Deniz Reyes, the affair was tightly contested.  The Warrior secured a 6-3 win in the first set, before falling 7-6 (10-8) in an evenly-matched second set.  The two played a race to 10 super tiebreaker to decide the winner, and the Wayne State sophomore grabbed a 10-3 triumph.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will take Friday off before traveling to play Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday, March 9, at 12 p.m. from the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center in West Palm Beach.
