Women's Tennis Shuts Out Ferris State to Advance in NCAA Midwest Regional

WSU will play the host Tiffin University in the regional finals on Saturday.

NORWALK, Ohio -- The No. 21-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (19-5 overall) faced fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member Ferris State (12-10 overall) in the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday afternoon at the tennis courts of Norwalk High School.  WSU defeated FSU 4-0 in the regional semifinals match to advance to the finals on Saturday against the host Tiffin University.

Friday's contest was the second contest of the season between the Warriors (the No. 3 seed) and the Bulldogs (the No. 6 seed).  The Green and Gold previously downed Ferris State 6-1 in Detroit on April 14.

Wayne State moved one step closer to clinching a spot in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla., with its victory.  It was also the squad's 11th consecutive triumph dating back to March 24.

DOUBLES
Similar to the last meeting between the two schools, WSU grabbed the opening doubles point over FSU to garner a 1-0 lead in the affair.

Both completed matches ended with a 6-0 shutout for the Warriors.  Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland), the No. 25-ranked doubles tandem in Division II, defeated the No. 39-ranked Morgan Waller and Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer, while Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) handled Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer and Katherine Earnest.  Those matches were at the first and third flights, respectively.

Over at the No. 2 position, Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) were ahead of Parker Nolan and Sophia Daavettila by a 4-1 margin, but the contest went unfinished when the Warriors officially nabbed the point.

SINGLES
WSU was able to finish the sweep in approximately two hours by securing the first three completed singles matches.

Two finished affairs had the same scores in both sets.  Gorgidze won her eighth match in a row via 6-3 and 6-2 decisions over Nolan at the No. 5 spot, while Beaulieu triumphed by those same scores in her contest with Earnest at the sixth flight.  The freshman Warrior improved her personal winning streak to seven.

Providing the clinching point on the day was Komar at the No. 3 position.  The redshirt junior was able to down Ana Ferrer 7-5, 6-1 to officially end the match and keep the Green and Gold in contention for the NCAA Championship.

Only one match saw a third set in progress, which had Ruyssen squaring off with Waller at the top flight.  Ruyssen, the No. 49-ranked singles player in the country, fell 6-0 in the opening set before rebounding with a 6-1 win of her own in the second.  She was leading 2-1 in the early stages of the final set when action stopped.

Arafat managed a 6-4 win over Daavettila at the second flight and was also leading 5-3 in the second set when the match ended.

Szpakowska obtained a 6-2 triumph in her opening set with Maria Ferrer at the No. 4 position.  The sophomore Warrior maintained a 5-2 advantage in the second when the affair went unfinished.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will face the host Dragons of Tiffin University (the No. 2 seed) on Saturday at 10 a.m. to decide which team will emerge from this section of the Midwest Regional.  Action will continue to be held at the tennis courts of Norwalk High School if weather permits.

The Dragons defeated the Warriors 4-3 in Detroit earlier this campaign on March 20, which also served as WSU's most recent loss before reeling off 11 straight victories.
