PERU, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the 2024-25 season on Tuesday afternoon at Rock Hollow Golf Club. The Warriors placed eighth out of 16 teams at Missouri-St. Louis' Midwest Ladies Collegiate with a three-round score of 940 (+76, 317-322-301).
"This was a really good start to the season for us," said head coach
Larry Hamilton. "We played a lot of stretches of solid golf and on day two, everyone started finding a better groove. I have to say that having Ting-Yu and Claudia finish 9th and 12th, respectively, in their first collegiate tournament was outstanding."
Individually, as coach mentioned, WSU was paced by a pair of top-12 performers competing in their first collegiate tournament in
Ting-Yu Kuo (Taipei, Taiwan / Taipei Municipal Zhong-zheng Senior) and
Claudia Portillo (Madrid, Spain / IES Ortega y Gassett). Kuo moved up four spots in round three to tie-for-ninth with a 223 (+7, 72-79-72) while Portillo ascended nine slots on Tuesday to tie-for-12th with a 226 (+10, 77-77-72).
Their fellow newcomer,
Sophia Wygonik (Westland, Mich. / Livonia Franklin (Eastern Michigan)), saw the most improvement on day two as she was 12 places better from round two to round three. Wygonik tied for 61st with a 250 (+34, 84-89-77). Rounding out the scoring for Wayne State was
Orianna Bylsma (Montague, Mich.) in a tie-for-66th with a 252 (+36, 84-84-84).
Sabel Imesch (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) tied-for-70th with a 253 (+37, 91-82-80).
Next up on the schedule for the Warriors is Ohio Dominican's Champions of Women's Golf Classic on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 16-17 at Champions Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.
