South Bend, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's fencing team earned three team wins at the DeCicco Duals, hosted by the University of Notre Dame. The competition took place in the Castellan Family Fencing Center.
The three wins came against Florida, Detroit Mercy, and Georgia Tech. The Green and Gold opened their competition on Saturday with a 14-13 win against Florida, winning all nine bouts in epee, while falling in foil (5-4), and sabre (8-1). WSU defeated the Titans 21-4 (two double forfeits), that included a 9-0 win in epee, 6-2 victory in foil, and a 6-2 triumph in sabre. When facing Georgia Tech, the Warriors won 14-10, with three double forfeits, all of which came in the foil weapon. The Green and gold prevailed in both the epee and foil weapons (8-1 and 6-0), but fell in sabre 9-0.
Wayne State fell in its five other matches, as the Warriors were bested by Notre Dame (23-4), Northwestern (22-5), Denison (15-12), Lawrence (15-12), and Cleveland State (17-10).
EPEE RESULTS
WSU had three student-athletes competing in the epee weapon, those being
Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary / Vörösmarty Mihály),
Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.), and
Salma Abdrabou (Mohandessin, Egypt / Dar El Tarbiah IGCSE).
Galfalvy notched a team-high 22 bout wins while falling just once. The sophomore had seven perfect rounds against Florida, Detroit Mercy, Northwestern, Denison, Lawrence, Georgia Tech, and Cleveland State, with her only loss coming against Notre Dame.
Abdrabou tallied the second most wins in epee, finishing 19-4 on the day. She collected six perfect rounds, winning each bout against UF, UDM, NW, DU, LU, GTU, and CSU.
Shevchenko prevailed in 11 of her 21 bouts, including 3-0 records against both Florida and Denison, and a 2-0 ledger against Detroit Mercy.
FOIL RESULTS
Both
Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy / Liceo Linguistico Niccolò Machiavelli) and
Noreen Bongado (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington) represented the Green and Gold in the foil weapon.
Mancini compiled 15 bout wins to just five losses. The junior began the day with back-to-back perfect performances, going 3-0 against Florida, and 2-0 against Detroit Mercy. She ended the day perfectly as well, with three bout victories vs. Lawrence and Cleveland State.
Bongado finished the day with a 4-16 record. She earned to bout wins against UDM, and added two more with a victory vs. UF and a triumph against Denison.
SABRE RESULTS
Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower [Macomb CC]) earned four bout victories, finishing 4-16 at the event. The redshirt senior tallied victories against Florida, Detroit Mercy, Lawrence, and Cleveland State.
Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. / Salem) compiled a 1-23 bout record, with her sole win coming against UDM.
