Swim & Dive Teams to Host Saginaw Valley State

Wayne State will be competing for the first time since late November.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University swimming & diving teams will be in action for the first time in 41 days on Saturday when they host Saginaw Valley State (No. 14 men) inside the Matthaei beginning at 1 p.m.  The Warrior men are slotted 21st according to the latest CSCAA rankings while the women check in at No. 19.

"It's been an 'interesting' week for the Warriors," said head coach Sean Peters.  "During our short winter training period, we had little technical difficulties, but we are working our way through it, and working our way back.  I am proud of the Warriors for their dedication and determination to make the best of things.  With Saturday's meet, I feel our women will have quite a few challenges on their hands, with a few of SVSU's swimmers qualifying for NCAA's last year.  With the men, SVSU is the 14th-ranked team and we are the 21st-ranked program.  Take that, combined with that SVSU's men wore tech suits last year in our loss to them, and they do like to use tech suits during every meet so far this year, we are definitely the underdogs on this one — as it is pretty common knowledge that we don't go to tech suits until mid or championship season.   Despite all of that, make no mistake about it, there will be some great racing going on this Saturday at Matthaei."

Saginaw Valley State is coached by fifth-year leader, Jason Lintjer, and he's assisted by Mike Darbee in his fourth season.  The Cardinals' diving side of things is led by Wayne State alum, Grant Porter, who competed for the Warriors from 2018 to 2023.  Porter earned Honorable Mention All-American honors in the one meter diving event at the 2023 NCAA Championships.

Following this weekend, the Warriors will have three dual meets remaining on their 2024-25 regular season schedule.  That includes at Grand Valley State on Saturday, Jan. 11, home against Oakland on Saturday, Jan. 18 and home vs. Calvin for Senior Day on Saturday, Jan. 25.  Just like Saturday's event against the Cardinals, each of those three contests will begin at 1 p.m.  The postseason will include the GLIAC Championships on Feb. 19-22 and then the NCAA Championships on March 11-15.
