Henry Ford Health Day Initiative - Energy Drinks

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University Sports Medicine Department was pleased to host Dr. Kenera Colley on November 18 as the guest speaker for a special presentation on caffeine use and energy drinks, sponsored by Henry Ford Health.

Dr. Colley is passionate about helping student-athletes stay healthy and on their respective fields of competition.  Her presentation on caffeine use and energy drinks focused on the amount and sources of caffeine in common energy drinks, and how caffeine impacts the body from both a health perspective and from an athletic performance perspective.  Dr. Colley also spoke about stimulant use overall, and the NCAA regulations related to stimulants and their inclusion in the category of performance enhancing substances.  Dr. Colley concluded her presentation by broadly discussing supplements - which includes energy drinks, pre-workouts and other stimulant sources, among other common supplements like creatine - and the lack of regulation of supplements by federal governing bodies.  She provided education on how to make informed decisions regarding supplement use such as utilizing third party testing and verification, but that all supplements are taken at the risk of the individual.  Dr. Colley can be contacted via the WSU Sports Medicine Department for any follow up questions, or for more information related to these topics.

Dr. Kenera Colley serves as the Henry Ford Health Sports Medicine Fellow assigned to Wayne State University for the 2025-26 school year.  A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Dr. Colley earned degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, the Mercer University School of Medicine, and the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, before serving residencies at the Cleveland Clinic, and with Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi.  Dr. Colley is also a Captain in the Army Reserve.
