Women's Indoor Track And Field Began Season at SVSU's Holiday Open

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's indoor track and field squad began its 2025-26 season on Friday at the SVSU Holiday Open.

Many WSU newcomers turned in memorable performances including freshman Ella Hufnagel in the pentathlon. Classmate Audrey Huizinga placed second in the 400m dash, while rookie Sohanny Gonzalez placed third in the triple jump. Not to be out-done by the newcomers, senior Hanne Bastiaansen won the 200m dash. All told Warriors posted seven top-10 performances in program history, plus the 4x400m relay notched the fourth fastest time in school history.

"The season opener in track and field is always a big deal for our team. They put in a ton of time and effort from September to December in pre-season, and only get this one competitive opportunity in the fall semester. We took advantage of that opportunity in what was as talented a field as we've probably ever seen in December.

"Our sprint squad is very deep and talented, and we saw some exciting things from them. Avery Wilson set three new personal records (PRs) and led off our winning 4x400 relay, and Keneisha Thomas returned after a redshirt indoor season with a pair of PRs and a strong relay leg as well. Hanne Bastiaansen got a great race in the 200 and prevailed by one-hundredth of a second. She also had a solid 4x400 relay leg, and freshman Audrey Huizinga sealed the 4x400 win after placing second in the open 400 earlier.

"We had new sprint PRs from Emmanuela Johnson, Rachel Overgaard, and freshman hurdler Sophie Smith as well. Warriors took seven of the top-11 places in the 200-meter dash, with all 11 at 26.00 seconds or faster, and that is tremendous depth.

"Nicole Warren led our field eventers with a a pair of top-five finishes in the long jump and triple jump. Freshman Sohanny Gonzalez had an excellent first meet in triple (jump), placing third and going well over 35 feet. Another freshman jumping well was Sophie Pell, who tied with sophomore Ava Steinhebel at 1.57m in the high jump. Our throwers had a good opener as well, with Makayla Stewart hitting 13 meters for the first time in weight throw, and Ania Toboy eclipsing the 14-meter mark. Warrior rookies did good things in throws led by Edi King in weight and Taylor Morrison in shot put.

"Maybe the highlight of the whole meet was the start, with senior Dali Shadhaya and freshman Ella Hufnagel tearing up the pentathlon. It was great to have Dali back in action after a year of injuries, and Ella had the second best score in Warrior history in her collegiate debut. She will be a key cog in this team for the foreseeable future.

Our distance squad will open up in January, so we didn't officially have anyone competing at SVSU, but coach Samantha Miller still took a Warrior win in the 3000 meters, competing unattached!"

KEY PERFORMANCES
Freshman Ella Hufnagel (Fowler, Mich.), in her first collegiate meet, posted the second-highest pentathlon score in school history (3,067) trailing only Sydney Vaughn's 3,191 set at the 2016 GLIAC Championships at Tiffin. Ella is only the third person in program history to eclipse 3,000 points joining Callie Brower (3,021 - 2014 GLIACs at Hillsdale) and Vaughn.
