Men's Tennis Ready to Host Chargers

DETROIT -- The No. 13-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis squad will host Hillsdale College on Saturday, March 1.  The first match is set to begin at 12:00 PM inside the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility.

The Chargers own a 3-4 ledger this season prior to the team's contest with Indiana Tech University (February 28).  Hillsdale has faced four member institutions of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) during the campaign as HC has been thwarted by Michigan Tech University (5-2), Lake Superior State University (4-3), Davenport University (6-1), and Ferris State University (5-2).

Keith Turner is in his 10th season at the helm for the Chargers.  In his time as the head coach, Hillsdale has compiled a 103-74 mark along with two Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Tournament Championships (2018 and 2021) and one appearance in the NCAA Tournament (2021).

ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS UPDATE
For the second consecutive week, the WSU men's tennis team is the No. 13-ranked squad in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).  The Warriors are joined by No. 25-ranked Ferris State as the two GLIAC members on the poll.

The Top-10 consists of Valdosta State University, West Florida University, Flagler College, Washburn University, Barry University, Saint Leo University, Rollins College, Columbus State University, the University of Indianapolis, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

LAST TIME OUT
WSU was handed its first loss of the spring campaign on Sunday, February 23, as the Warriors fell 5-2 at Division I foe Western Michigan University.  

The Green and Gold started well, earning the doubles point as the pairing of George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) along with the duo of Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) and Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) both prevailed in the No. 1 position and the No. 2 slot, respectively.

Wayne State won just one singles match as Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) defeated Dimitri Moriarty in the No. 6 singles position.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will head to Florida for its annual spring break.  WSU will play five matches between March 5-11, with four of those against squads currently ranked in the top-10 in the nation in Division 2.
