Women's Indoor Track & Field Places Second At W-C-W Invitational

WSU had five event winners plus a relay.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's track and field squad placed second at the Fifth Annual W-C-W triangular meet hosted by Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday. Northern Michigan won for the second consecutive years totaling 133 points to edge WSU (120.5) and the host Cardinals (85.5).

Event winners for WSU were junior Hanne Bastiaansen (Tessenderlo, Belgium) with a school record time in the 300m dash; senior Emily Gordon (Northville, Mich.) in the 400m dash; graduate student Taylor Hopkins (Sanford, Mich. / Meridian) in the 3K; junior Aubrey Migoski (Wyandotte, Mich. / Roosevelt) in the 5K; the 4x300m relay quartet of Bastiaansen, junior Avery Wilson (Davison, Mich.), sophomore Rachel Overgaard (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron), and junior Elyse Miller (Woodhaven, Mich. / Gibraltar Carlson) in a school record time of 2:42.04; and freshman Olivia Findlay (Marlette, Mich.) in the high jump.

"This meet is always a highlight on our schedule, and the competition and camaraderie between the three programs is great. We have added new traditions in the past few years, including a post-meet meal and exchanging of gifts between all three teams.

"Hanne Bastiaansen had a spectacular meet with two wins and new school records. Emily Gordon's win in the 400 was a shocker and a big breakthrough for her, and we got solid wins from Aubrey Migoski, Olivia Findlay, and Taylor Hopkins.

"Many other Warriors stepped up for the team as well, including Nicole Warren, Ania Toboy, Alex Harmer, Anna Gdowski, Emilee Rudlaff, Emmanuela Johnson, and Rachel Overgaard.

"We ultimately came up short of the victory, and credit to Northern Michigan for a great effort today. We will bounce back and have a little extra motivation to step up and perform at our utmost capabilities at the end of the season."
