DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team will welcome Oakland University on Sunday, March 23, with the match slated to begin at 11:00 AM. The contest will be the final non-conference competition for the Warriors.
LAST TIME OUT
The Green and Gold downed Saginaw Valley State University 6-1 in the squad's most recent match, earning its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win of the season. WSU earned the first point of the contest as the team won 2-of-3 doubles matches. Wayne State went on to prevail in 5-of-6 matches in singles to earn the victory.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Oakland has a 3-7 mark on the season and has fallen in its last three matches. OU has collected wins against Northwood University (5-2), Eastern Michigan University (5-2), and the University of Redlands (5-2). The Green and Gold has won the previous four meetings between the squads, including last year's 7-0 triumph.
David Brown is in his second season as head coach of Oakland. While at the helm, Brown has helped the Golden Grizzlies to an 8-21 ledger and a Horizon League tournament berth in 2024.
ITA RANKINGS UPDATE
In the most recent ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the Wayne State women's tennis squad appeared as the No. 32-ranked team in Division II. Three WSU student-athletes were ranked individually in singles, with
Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) in 26th,
Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France Enfants-Nantais [Keiser]) in 29th, and
Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) in 75th.
Three doubles teams received rankings as well, as the tandem of Arafat and Szpakowska is 10th, the duo of Ruyssen and
Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia / Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]) is 12th, and the pairing of Ruyssen and
Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) is 28th.
