Galfalvy and Mancini Finish First Day of NCAA Women's Fencing Championships

University Park, Pa. -- The Wayne State University women's fencing squad had two student-athletes compete in the first day of the NCAA Women's Fencing Championships on Saturday. Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary / Vörösmarty Mihály) and Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy / Liceo Linguistico Niccolò Machiavelli) represented the Green and Gold in the epee and foil weapons respectively.

Galfalvy won six of her 15 bouts, totaling a 6-9 ledger while having a -8 touch differential (56-64). The sophomore collected wins over Anya Mehrotra of Yale (5-4), Maria Alvim of Sacred Heart (5-2), Alice Lan of the University of California San Diego (5-3), Gloria Klughardt of Ohio State (5-4), and the United States Air Force Academy's Christina Watrall (5-4) and Elizabeth Kim (5-2).

Mancini, making her second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance, tallied three wins in 15 bouts and was -29 in touches (39-68).  The Warrior earned bout wins over Notre Dame's Rebeca Candescu (5-3), Katina Proestakis Ortiz of Pennsylvania (5-4), and Northwestern's Yukari Takamizawa (5-1).

With the combined scores from both the men's and women's squads, Wayne State will enter the final day of competition ranked 16th in the field of 33 schools.

Galfalvy and Mancini are set to return tomorrow, March 23, for the last day of the NCAA Championships.
