Men's Tennis Hosts Panthers and Lakers to Open GLIAC Competition

DETROIT -- The No. 18-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis squad will host both Davenport University and No. 21-ranked Grand Valley State University to begin GLIAC play.  The Green and Gold will face DU on Friday, March 28, and GVSU on Saturday, March 29.  Both matches are set to begin at 10:00 AM.

LAST TIME OUT
The Warriors wrapped their non-conference portion of the campaign with a 6-1 win over Tiffin University last Thursday.

WSU lost the doubles point, as the squad was only able to claim one of the three matches.  Wayne State swept TU in singles competition, winning all six matches and earning the 6-1 triumph.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Davenport owns a 13-4 ledger that includes a 1-1 mark in GLIAC play.  The Panthers have won their last two contest and three of the last four.  WSU has prevailed in the last seven meeting between the squads, including last year's 6-1 triumph at DU.

The Panthers are led by Patrick Grashorn who is in his 15th season at the helm for Davenport.  The experienced head coach has guided the DU men's tennis squad to a 193-153 mark. Grashorn leads the way for the women's tennis team as well, helping the squad to a 187-168 ledger.

SCOUTING THE LAKERS
Prior to its match with Ferris State University (March 28), Grand Valley State is 9-2 with a 2-0 record against GLIAC opponents.  Last season, WSU downed the Lakers in all three of the squad's meetings.  The Green and Gold triumphed 4-3 during the regular season, 4-2 while battling in the GLIAC Tournament, and 4-1 in the NCAA Midwest Regional.

Head coach Samantha Barr is in her sixth season leading GVSU, and has helped the team to a 67-40 record.  Barr is also at the helm for the Grand Valley State women's tennis team, leading the squad to an 85-36 mark.

ITA RANKINGS UPDATE
In the most recent rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the Warriors are ranked 18th as a squad.  Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) is the sole member of the WSU men's squad to receive an individual ranking, as he appears as the No. 22-ranked singles player.  In doubles, the pairing of Drenth and George Day ((Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) are the No. 21-ranked duo.
