Women's Fencing Has Two Top-Six Finishers At NCAA Regionals

Galfalvy finishes fifth, and Mancini places sixth.

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Four members of the Wayne State University women's fencing squad participated at the 2025 NCAA Midwest Regionals on Saturday hosted by Denison University.  WSU was competing against Cleveland State, Denison, Detroit Mercy, Lawrence, Northwestern, Notre Dame, and Ohio State.

Women's Epee
Participating for the Warriors were graduate student Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.), along with sophomores Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary) and Salma Abdrabou (Cairo, Egypt).  Galfalvy was the No. 7 seed, with Abdrabou at 15 and Shevchenko ranked No. 24 in the region.

Abdrabou went 5-1 in pool play and was +4 (26-22) in touches as she won three bouts by a 5-4 score, while Galfalvy had a 4-2 mark and was +4 (24-20) in touches.  Reka won two of her three bouts that went 5-4.  Meanwhile, Shevchenko compiled an 0-6 record and was -14 (16-30) in touches.

Both Abdrabou and Galfalvy advanced to the final round of pools as one of the top 12, which consisted of four from Ohio State and three each from Notre Dame and Northwestern.

In the final round of pool play, each fencer had a five-touch bout against each of the other 11 qualifiers.  Galfalvy finished with a 7-4 record and was +9 (47-38) in touches, while Abdrabou went 3-8 and was -17 (32-49) in touches.  Notre Dame had three of the top-four finishers in Kaylin Hsieh (10-1, +26 / 50-24), Eszter Muhari (10-1, +22 / 54-32) and Felicity Sebastian (7-4, +11 / 48-37), respectively, with Ohio State's Gloria Klughardt (7-4, +12 / 47-35) placing third.  Galfalvy finished fifth with Abdrabou placing 10th out of 21 participants.

Women's Foil 
Wayne State's lone competitor was junior Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) as the No. 10 seed.  Since there were 16 participants in this weapon, the regionals consisted of a round-robin five-touch bout against the other 15 entrants.  Mancini compiled a 10-5 record and was +19 (59-40) in touches to finish sixth.  Notre Dame had three of the top-four finishers in the weapon in Ariadna Tucker Alarcon (13-2, +44 / 72-28), Josephina Conway (13-2, +33 / 71-38) and Rebeca Candescu (10-5, +28 / 67-39), respectively.  Ohio State's Alina Lee was third (11-4, +25 / 65-40), while Northwestern's Yukari Takamizawa (10-5, +28 / 65-37) placed fifth.

Women's Sabre
No one from WSU qualified to compete at the NCAA Regionals.

UP NEXT
The NCAA will announce its selections for the 2025 NCAA Championships on Tuesday (March 11th) evening.  The national championships will consist of the top 24 fencers per gender per weapon competing in a round-robin five-touch bouts against the other 23 qualifiers over two days (March 22-23) to determine team standings.  The top four individuals will advance to the semifinals on day two to fence 15-touch bouts to determine the gold medalist.
