Two Warriors Receive GLIAC Commissioner's Award

Jones and Tripp recognized for success in the classroom and on the court/in the pool.

DETROIT -- Wayne State University senior basketball forward Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) and men's swimming graduate student Trevor Jones (Farmington, Mich.) were selected to receive a GLIAC Commissioner's Award as announced by the league office this afternoon.

Tripp becomes just the second WSU women's basketball student-athlete to be selected as a GLIAC Commissioner's Award recipient, joining Sam Cherney (2022).  A  College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honoree for the third consecutive year, she earned First Team All-GLIAC recognition for the second consecutive season as well as being named Second Team All-District.

On the court, she led the Warriors in points (450), scoring average (14.1 PPG), field goals made (175), field goal percentage (.494 / min. 75 attempts), free throws made (79), assists (127), steals (67), defensive rebounds (179), and minutes (989).  Tripp, who broke the WSU mark for starts in a season (32), is one of three female national finalists for the 2025 John Wooden Citizenship Cup.  For her Wayne State career, Tripp played in 111 games, making 91 starts and playing 2,941 minutes.  She scored 1,328 points, which ranks fourth in program history, grabbed 700 rebounds, dished out 344 assists and accumulated 237 steals, while shooting 78 percent (293-of-374) from the charity stripe.

Academically, the Health and Physical Education Teaching major has been a member of the Warrior Elite (term GPA 3.5+) all seven semesters, including six terms with a perfect 4.0 GPA.  In addition, Tripp is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was a member of the Athlete Well-Being Committee during the 2023-24 academic year.  She was previously a member of the WSU Student Leadership Council.  Tripp will be a three-time GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team selection as well as a three-year recipient of the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award.  Last month, she was honored as one of 10 females nationally (from all sports and all divisions) to be selected to the Allstate NACDA Good Works Team for winter sports for her involvement in the community.

Jones becomes the fifth male swimmer at WSU to be a two-time recipient of the GLIAC Commissioner's Award joining Cauli Bedran, Luka Cvetko, Ryan Katulski and Stewart Nowinski.

He earned a bachelor's degree in Finance in December of 2023 (2.5 years) and began the MBA program in January of 2024.  Jones was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) all seven semesters at Wayne State, with a perfect 4.00 term GPA five times.  He is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is serving as Secretary/Treasurer during the 2024-25 academic year.  He was previously a member of the Student-Athlete Leadership Council.

Jones garnered First Team CSCAA Scholar All-America accolades in 2022, 2023 and 2024 (2025 is still to be finalized) and will be a three-year member of the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team.  In addition, he will receive the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award for the third consecutive year this summer.  Jones has already earned CSC Academic All-America distinction twice (Second Team in 2023, First Team in 2024) with the 2025 voting announced next week).

In the pool, Jones was an 11-time All-American (three First Team [top eight in an event], and eight Second Team/Honorable Mention [9-16 in an event]), with a best finish of sixth.  He earned All-GLIAC honors [top three in an event] seven times (three Second Team and four Third Team).  Jones placed in the top six all four years in both the 1650 Free and 400 Individual Medley, all three times in the 1000 Free, 800 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay and 200 Fly.

Criteria Include:
The nominee must have completed four semesters of full-time enrollment and therefore may not be a true freshman or true sophomore.

The nominee must have attained a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.5, on a 4.0 grading scale.

The nominee must be a starter or key reserve.

The selections of Jones and Tripp increase the number of WSU student-athletes recognized to 88 since the conference instituted this award for the 2007-08 academic year.  The 88 honorees for WSU is second most in the conference during the 18-year history of the program.

The GLIAC Commissioner's Awards are bestowed after the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes of junior, senior or graduate student status that excel both in the classroom and in competition.
