Men's Tennis Set to Compete at Roosevelt and Purdue Northwest

DETROIT -- The No. 19-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis squad will play its final two road matches of the regular season this weekend.  The team will travel to GLIAC newcomer Roosevelt University on Friday, April 11, before competing at Purdue University Northwest on Saturday, April 12.

LAST TIME OUT
The Green and Gold got back in the win column after downing both Lake Superior State University (5-2) and Michigan Tech Universiity (6-1).

At LSSU, the Warriors faltered early, surrendering the doubles point to the Lakers before prevailing in all but one match in singles competition to capture the 5-2 victory.

While battling at MTU, Wayne State swept the Huskies in doubles action, claiming the early advantage.  The Green and Gold continued its barrage, winning 5-of-6 matches in singles and securing the 6-1 win.

SCOUTING THE LAKERS
Roosevelt has an 8-12 ledger this season, but have been unable to claim a GLIAC victory as the team is 0-5 in matches within the conference.  This meeting will mark the first contest between the squads as RU was a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athleteics (NAIA) before making the leap to Division II prior to this year.

The Lakers are led by Dominic DeNardo in his second season as head coach.  After taking the helm ahead of the 2023-24 campaign, DeNardo has guided Roosevelt to an 18-21 record, including a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) tournament berth in his first season.

SCOUTING THE PRIDE
PNW enters its match against Ferris State University with a 15-6 record that includes a 2-2 mark in GLIAC competition.  The Pride are led by second-year head coach Selenay Heper.  Heper has aided the PNW men's tennis program to a 28-15 record in her time at the helm and has the pride as the No. 37-ranked team in the country.  Wayne State topped PNW 5-2 in the squad's meeting last season despite falling in doubles competition.

ITA RANKINGS UPDATE
Wayne State checks in as the No. 19-ranked squad in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) most recent poll, which was released on Wednesday, April 9.  Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) and George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) both received rankings in singles competition, as the senior appears as the No. 35-ranked player, while the freshman is ranked 73rd.  The duo of Drenth and Day remain ranked in doubles play as well, being viewed as the No. 23-ranked pairing nationally.
