Men's Tennis Ready to Compete in NCAA Midwest Regional

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team travels to Indianapolis, Ind. to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament hosted by the University of Indianapolis.  The No. 3-seeded Green and Gold will face No. 6-seeded Ferris State University on Friday, May 9, at 11:00 AM at Center Grove High School.

WSU is set to compete against FSU, with the winner of the match scheduled to battle with the victor of the contest between UIndy and Purdue Northwest.  The winner of this section of the Midwest Regional, alongside 15 more squads, will move on to the NCAA Championship Round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, FL. at Sanlando Park.

The Warriors aim to make their fourth consecutive NCAA Quarterfinal match, as the team has been one of the final eight squads alive each of the past three seasons, including a National Championship berth during the 2022 postseason when WSU was bested by No. 3-ranked Barry after topping No. 1-ranked Columbus State in the National Semifinal.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
This will be the third time this season that the squads have matched against each other with the Warriors prevailing in both contests.  WSU downed Ferris State 5-2 during the regular season and 4-3 in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinal.  In the first match, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) nabbed a program-record 105th singles win by way of a 7-5, 7-5 victory in the No. 1 position.

Ferris State is led by Mark Doren in his sixth year as the official head coach and seventh total after serving at the team's interim head coach during the 2018-19 season.  Doren has guided Ferris State to an 88-44 overall record that includes a 2-5 ledger during the NCAA Tournament.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
UIndy enters the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament as the No. 2 seed and host of this section of the region.  Wayne State met the Greyhounds in its season opener which saw WSU snag a 4-3 win at UIndy.  The Hounds went 1-2 in their ensuing three matches after the loss the Wayne State, but quickly found success, rounding the regular season on a 13-match win streak.  UIndy extended that number to 15 matches after a pair of wins in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Tournament and will face PNW in the opening round of the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament.

In his 13th season at UIndy, Malik Tabet aided his squad to a 19-3 mark this season that included a GLVC Tournament Championship.

SCOUTING THE PRIDE
PNW is the No. 7 seed in this year's tournament after a 17-8 ledger following the GLIAC Tournament.  The two squads faced each other during the regular season, with the Pride claiming the 4-3 victory on its home court.  PNW fought to the GLIAC Tournament Semfinals where the squad fell 4-2 to Grand Valley State.  The Pride will battle with UIndy to open the regional.

At the helm for the Pride is Selenay Heper in her second season with the squad.  In her two years with the team, Heper has helped the Hounds to a 30-17 overall mark.
