Five Fencers and One Golfer Garner Women's At-Large Academic All-District Recognition

Abdrabou, Galfalvy, Mancini, Shevchenko, and Siddiqui from women's fencing, and Imesch from women's golf were recognized for academic success.

DETROIT -- Six Wayne State University women's student-athletes were honored with College Sports Communicators (CSC, formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District accolades on Tuesday, June 17, as announced by the organization.  

NCAA eligible sports that are included on the "At-Large" ballot are fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, water polo, men's volleyball, men's wresting, women's beach volleyball, women's crew/rowing, and women's field hockey.  WSU sports in the "At-Large" category are fencing and golf.

Nomination criteria states that the student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or higher (on a 4.0 scale), and must compete in at least 70% of the team's competitions.

WSU student-athletes to earn Academic All-District distinctions were Salma Abdrabou (Cairo, Egypt Dar El Tarbiah IGCSE), Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary / Vörösmarty Mihály), and Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.) of the epee squad, foilist Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy / Liceo Linguistico Niccolò Machiavelli), Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. / Salem) of the sabre team, and golfer Sabel Imesch (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South).  

After capturing her second Honorable Mention All-Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) honor is as many years, and being named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team, Abdrabou adds to her accolades by earning her first CSC Academic All-District nod.  The sophomore competed in six events for WSU during the 2024-25 campaign, tallying an 86-41 ledger in the epee weapon that included a 19-8 mark at the NFC Championships (11/23-24), a 4-3 performance in the Danosi Open (1/11), a 19-4 record at the DeCicco Duals, a 16-8 ledger at the Schiller Duals (2/1-2) and a 20-9 bout record at the conference championships.  Abdrabou competed at the NCAA Midwest Regional (3/8) where she finished 8-9.  The Cairo, Egypt native has a 3.98 GPA while majoring in Technology, Information Systems and Analytics.

Galfalvy has been selected First Team All-CCFC in both of her years competing for the Green and Gold, was named Second Team All-Region by the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA), earned GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team honors in her first year eligible, and has the fourth-most wins in program history in the epee weapon with 180.  This year, the sophomore appeared in seven competitions with an overall bout record of 106-46.  The 106 victories was the most in any weapon for the women's team.  Galfalvy tallied a 20-7 mark at the NFC Championships, went 4-4 during the Danosi Open, compiled a 22-1 record during the DeCicco Duals, earned an 18-6 ledger at the Schiller Duals, went 24-6 at the CCFC Championships while finishing second individually in the epee, finished fifth at the NCAA Midwest Regional after an 11-6 performance, and qualified for the NCAA Championships (3/22-23) where she earned a 7-16 bout mark.  Majoring in Marketing, Galfalvy has maintained a 3.90 GPA.

Mancini has earned CSC Academic All-District honors in both of her years eligible.  The junior has qualified for the NCAA Fencing Championships in each of her three years at WSU, ranks fifth all-time in the foil with 274 bout wins, is a three-time All-CCFC honoree, has twice been a member of the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team, has been selected to the All-Midwest Region Team by the USFCA, and was a 2023-24 recipient of the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award.  The Rome, Italy native garnered a 90-54 mark in the foil weapon as she compiled a 24-2 bout record at the NFC Championships, earned a 9-1 mark at the Danosi Open, went 15-5 in the DeCicco Duals, tallied a 14-10 ledger at the Schiller Duals, finished with a 14-12 record at the conference championships, claimed sixth-place at the NCAA Midwest Regional after a 10-5 performance, and notched a 4-19 mark in the NCAA Championships.  Mancini has a 3.96 GPA as a Global Studies major.

Shevchenko wrapped her career with the Warriors as the program's all-time wins leader in the epee weapon with 245 bout victories.  She has been named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team in each of her four years eligible, including two All-Academic Excellence Team distinctions, received the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award twice (2021-22 and 2023-24), was named to the All-CCFC Second Team following the 2021-22 campaign, and has earned her second CSC Academic All-District honor.  This season, the Troy native collected a 50-58 mark after a 13-14 performance at the NFC Championships, a 4-3 ledger at the Danosi Open, an 11-10 mark in the DeCicco Duals, a 10-14 bout record at the Schiller Duals, a 12-11 ledger during the league championships, and an appearance at the NCAA Midwest Regional.  In her time at Wayne State, Shevchenko maintained a 3.71 GPA while earning a bachelor's degree and pursuing a master's in Exercise & Sport Science.

Siddiqui has twice been named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team, was a 2023-24 recipient of the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award, and was the 2024-25 Deans' Award recipient from the Irvin D. Reid Honors College for having the highest cumulative grade-point average of any student-athlete in that college.  The Junior competed in five events for WSU and claimed a 1-5 ledger at the Danosi Open.  She has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor roll (term GPA 3.5+) for each of the last four semesters and has maintained a 4.00 GPA while majoring in Biochemistry and Chemical Biology Honors.

Imesch has been named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team in both of her years eligible, was a 2023-24 recipient of the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award, is a two-time All-GLIAC Team member (First Team in 2022-23 and HM in 2023-24), was named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year following the 2022-23 campaign, becoming just the second student-athlete in program history to garner the award, and served as a Co-Chair of the Social Media and Advertising Committee during the 2024-25 academic year.  The junior appeared in 10 events this season and averaged 80 strokes per round.  She nabbed three top 10 finishes and four top 25 marks.  At the GLIAC Tournament (4/25-26), the Grosse Pointe Farms native placed tied-for-eighth among a field of 43 competitors.  Her best finish came during the squad's final regular-season event, the Walsh's Cav Classic (4/15-16), where she placed tied-for-fourth after posting a 155 (+11, 75-80).  Imesch has carried a 3.72 GPA while pursuing a bachelor's degree in Global Supply Chain Management.

Galfalvy and Mancini will advance to the Division 1 national ballot with the announcement from CSC on Women's At-Large Academic All-Americans coming on July 8.  Fencing student-athletes are considered Division 1 because they compete in a National Collegiate Championship.
