Men's Tennis Wraps ITA Midwest Regional Championships; Hill Wins Singles B Draw

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad has wrapped play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships.  The tournament was a three-day event (September 27-29) that included teams from the GLIAC, G-MAC, and GLVC.  The Green and Gold collected a 20-10 mark in singles action, while going 10-6 in doubles.

In singles competition, Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) found the most success for WSU, as he battled through to the Final Round of the B Draw while nabbing five wins along the way.  Hill triumphed 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 over Vladislav Gorbatenko of the University of Indianapolis to claim the Singles B Draw title.  Warren Gunnar (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) advanced to the Final Round of the C Draw, earning three wins.  Gunnar fell to the draw's top-seeded player, Kai Van-Room (Illinois Springfield), 6-2, 7-5.

The pairing of Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany) and Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia) collected a 4-1 record in the A Draw, falling in the final match to a duo from Grand Valley State University.

UP NEXT
WSU's men's tennis team will next appear at the ITA Cup, with the tournament starting on Thursday, October 16, and concluding on Saturday, October 18.  The singles and doubles champions from each of the eight regions will receive an automatic bid to the ITA Cup.  Four more regional finalists and four regional quarterfinalists will qualify with an at-large selection.  The at-large selections are based on the individuals ranking from the previous year, as well as quality of wins.
