Men's Fencers Compete at Junior Olympics and Senior World Cup

DETROIT -- Over this past weekend, five members of the Wayne State University men's fencing squad competed at either the Junior Olympics, held at the Kansas City Convention Center, or the Senior Epee World Cup, in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.

Four WSU student-athletes saw action at the Junior Olympics.  The four were Justin Chenh (Falls Church, Va.), Connor Desautels (Redding, Conn. / Joel Barlow), Gabriel Dumoulin (Newtown, Conn.), and Finn McIsaac (West Bloomfield, Mich.).

McIsaac competed in the Junior Men's Foil event, posting a 4-2 mark in pool play while tallying a +3 touch differential (23-20).  The freshman entered the direct elimination stage seeded 129th, falling in a hard-fought 15-14 bout in the Table of 256 to Aiden Kim and finished 152nd of 311 athletes.

Chenh, in Junior Men's Epee, collected a 4-2 bout ledger during pool action with a touch differential of +3 (23-20).  The Falls Church, Va., product was bested 15-14 by Edward Chen in the Table of 256.

A pair of men's fencers represented the Green and Gold in the Junior Men's Sabre, as Desautels and Dumoulin each competed.  Dumoulin earned two wins in pool play before falling 15-11 in the Table of 256 to Matthew Kang.  Desautels was bested in each of his pool play bouts including a 5-3 defeat against Jonathan NG who advanced to the semifinals.

Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School) competed at the Senior Epee World Cup.  The sophomore was exempt from pool play as he was seeded 16th entering the competition.  In the Table of 64, Elsayed defeated Finland's Kerkko Jarvi 15-10, before downing international teammate Mahmoud Mohsen 12-11 in the Table of 32.  The WSU student-athlete fell in the Table of 16 to Eugeni Gavalda, 15-11.
