DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's and women's fencing teams will compete at The Ohio State University's Elite Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, at the French Field House. The event will begin on Saturday, November 8, and conclude on Sunday, November 9.
LAST TIME OUT
Members of the Green and Gold last competed at Northwestern's Remenyik Open on October 19-20.
Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill) of the men's squad finished as the event's runner-up in the Regional Open Circuit men's foil section, compiling a 10-2 ledger.
Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) was the lone member of the women's squad to compete, tallying a 5-2 mark in the foil weapon.
TOURNAMENT OUTLOOK
WSU will be joined by multiple high-level programs, including seven ranked squads on the women' side and six on the men's, according to the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA). Ranked opponents for the men are No. 2-ranked Notre Dame, No. 3-ranked Harvard, No. 5-ranked OSU, No. 6-ranked Penn, No. 7-ranked Penn State, and No. 10-ranked North Carolina. The seven ranked teams for the women are No. 1-ranked Notre Dame, No. 3-ranked Harvard, No. 5-ranked Ohio State, No. 6-ranked Penn, No. 7-ranked PSU, and No. 10-ranked UNC. In addition to the many ranked programs, Air Force, Northwestern, Denison, Cleveland State, Princeton, and Duke will be in attendance as well.
On Saturday, the event will feature six rounds, with the first beginning at 8:00 AM and the sixth starting at 4:30 PM. There will be five rounds on Sunday, starting at 8:00 AM, with the final round slotted for 3:00 PM.
