Women's Indoor Track & Field Has Success At Findlay Alumni Classic

DETROIT -- Nearly 40 members of the Wayne State University women's indoor track and field squad participated in the Findlay Alumni Classic earlier today at The Robert A. Malcolm Athletic Center. WSU finished second with 65 points behind host Findlay (89 points). The Oiler Alumni totaled five points, while Malone garnered three points.

"We have been a track-dominated team at times over the past few seasons, but today our field event athletes took center stage and it was great to see.

"Sophie Pell started the meet off with a nice 1.64 clearance in high jump, and she nearly made 1.67. Solid jumping from Gracie Klink and Teagan Kimble as well. Sohanny Gonzalez had a huge day in long jump, with several jumps over her previous lifetime best and her best jump going past the 18-foot mark. Nicole Warren had a real breakthrough in triple jump going well over 11 meters, and had a very solid effort in long jump as well. Our throwers had a good day as well, led by Ania Toboy in weight throw, Taylor Morrison in shot put, and Makayla Stewart in both events.

On the track, we were led by Avery Wilson taking second in the 60 and fourth in the 300, Hanne Bastiaansen's runner-up finish in the 300, and Lauren Wooten's win in the 200. Rachel Felstow set a school record in the 600, and Ava Peters had a good effort with a second-place finish in the 1000. Megan Zahnow took another runner-up finish for us in the 60 hurdles, with Keneisha Thomas and Alex Harmer close behind in third and fourth.

"We definitely had some rust after a lengthy holiday break, but we saw progress in all event groups. Findlay has a great program and they provided excellent competition for us as we got back into competitive mode. We will keep pushing forward next week at Grand Valley."

NOTES
The Warriors had two event winners in Sohanny Gonzalez (long jump) and Lauren Wooten (200m dash), plus 10 runner-up finishes with Nicole Warren placing second in both the triple jump and long jump. Annabelle Smith finished third in both the long jump and 200m dash as part of eight third-place finishes for WSU.
