DETROIT -- The Wayne State University swimming & diving teams will conclude their regular-season schedule this Friday, January 23, and Saturday, January 24, with back-to-back dual meets. National Spotlight
The most recent edition of the College Swimming & Diving Coaching Association (CSCAA) top 25 was released in December, with both Warrior squads receiving votes. The WSU men are 14th in the nation with 100 total points, while the Green and Gold women collected eight total votes to appear just outside of the top 25 in 27th position. The next CSCAA dual meet top 25 will release on Friday afternoon.
About Davenport
Davenport is led by eighth-year head coach Justin Vasquez. He is the only head coach that either squad has known in their entire existence, as DU's women's program started in 2018-19 and its men's team in 2020-21. This season, the men have a 2-1 dual meet ledger with victories over Aquinas College and Albion College. The Panthers own a 2-2 mark on the women's side with triumphs over the same two opponents. WSU and DU saw one another earlier this campaign way back in October for the Davenport Invitational.
About Oakland
The Golden Grizzlies are coached by Mitch Alters, who is in his third season as head coach after taking over following the retirement of Pete Hovland in 2023. Alters served as Associate Head Coach under Hovland beginning with the 2021-22 season and lasting two years. He also was a student-athlete at OU and was a four-year letterwinner for the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland continues to be a staple on the WSU calendar each year. Just this season, the Warriors visited Rochester, Mich., this past December for OU's Golden Grizzly Invite. OU most recently wrapped up a tri-meet by welcoming Denison and Miami (Ohio) on January 9 and 10.
Next Up
The next action for Wayne State will be postseason competition. WSU will battle at the 2026 GLIAC Championships from Friday, February 6, through Monday, February 9. The conference championships will once again be held in Holland, Mich., and the Holland Community Aquatic Center. Morning competition is scheduled for 10 a.m. each day, with the evening events slated for 5:30 p.m.
