Men's Tennis Set for a Trio of Matches

DETROIT -- The No. 23-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis squad (4-1 overall) is ready for three matches this week, starting at home with No. 25-ranked Tiffin University (5-1 overall) on Wednesday, February 25, at 1:00 PM, before traveling to Hillsdale College (3-3 overall) on Saturday, February 28, at 1:00 PM, then returning home to host No. 5-ranked (Division III) Case Western Reserve University (10-1 overall) at 9:00 AM on Sunday, March 1.  Both of the home matches will be at the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility, while the match at HC will be at the Margot V. Biermann Center.

LAST TIME OUT
The Warriors collected two impressive wins last week, besting Fairmont State 6-1 on Friday before topping No. 20-ranked Charleston 5-2 on Saturday.

SCOUTING THE DRAGONS
TU enters the contest with a 5-1 ledger, winning its last five matches, including a 4-3 win over No. 13-ranked Grand Valley State, a 4-3 win over Davenport, and a 6-1 triumph at Purdue Northwest.

Senior Jose Portillo earned this week's Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors after posting a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 win in the No. 3 doubles to help guide the Dragons to the victory over Charleston.

Phil Conely is in his 17th season at the helm for Tiffin, helping the squad to a 224-174 ledger, while earning G-MAC Coach of the Year honors five times on the men's side, while being named COTY seven times with the women's team.  When Tiffin was in the GLIAC, Conely was tabbed as the Coach of the Year twice.

SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
Aa mentioned before, the Chargers are 3-3, with triumphs against Spring Arbor (6-1), Michigan Tech (5-2), and Purdue Northwest (6-1).

A trio of All-G-GMAC selections return for Hillsdale, as Ryan Papazov was tabbed as the conference's co-Freshman of the Year last season, while Ellis Klanduch and Henry Hammond earned all-league selections as well.

Keith Turner has been HC's head man since the 2014-15 campaign, helping the team to a 114-82 record and being voted G-MAC Coach of the Year twice.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
CWRU has posted a 10-1 record, finishing in third place at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III National Men's Indoor Championship last week.

The Spartans return four All-University Athletic Conference (UAA) selections, as Anmay Devaraj, Leon Chen, Jon Totorica, and Matthew Plunkett all return from last season.  Devearaj also eared ITA All-American honors in doubles last season.

Todd Wojtkowski is in his 18th season as the head coach of the Spartans, helping the squad to a 344-126 ledger, eight appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament, three National Runner-Up finishes, and the Division III National Championship during the 2022-23 campaign.
