Men's Tennis Set to Play Six Matches over Spring Break

DETROIT -- The No. 6-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team is heading to Florida to play six matches over Spring Break.  The Green and Gold will face St. Thomas Aquinas College, Flagler College, Florida Southern College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Rollins College, and Saint Leo University.

LAST TIME OUT
The Warriors nabbed an impressive 5-2 win over No.5-ranked (Division 3) Case Western Reserve on Sunday, March 1, in Motown to improve to 7-1 overall on the year.

After losing out on the doubles point, WSU earned five wins in singles to defeat the Spartans.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
St. Thomas Aquinas is 5-0 entering its match with Edinboro on March 9, most recently topping Hofstra University 4-3.  

Sophomore Erik Victor Tauson returns for STAC after being named last year's East Coast Conference (ECC) Rookie of the Year as well as the East Region Rookie of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).  Junior Henry Ronnberg is ranked 55th in singles according to the ITA, while the pairing of Don Vinz Lominoque and Nagamitsu Kuroda is viewed as the No. 15-ranked doubles team.

Head coach Dan Rockhill has guided the Spartans to a 53-17 ledger as was named last season's ECC Coach of the Year.

SCOUTING THE SAINTS
Flagler has posted a 7-1 ledger ahead of its contest with Lenoir-Rhyne (March 11), with the lone loss coming the West Florida in the ITA Indoor Championships last month.  The Saints have earned five ranked wins this season and are ranked fifth in the most recent iteration of the ITA Poll.

FC has four individuals ranked in singles, those four are Ilian Borlee (19th), Simon Malis (32nd), Raphael Rousson (36th), and Aniss Rafiq (52nd).  

Jonas Piibor has been at the helm for Flagler since 2021, helping the team to an 88-20 ledger, earning Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Coach of the Year a trio of times and leading the Saints to the NCAA Tournament in each of the prior four years, including a National Runner-Up finish in 2024.

SCOUTING THE MOCCASINS
FSC is 6-3 entering the match against Ferris State, collecting a pair of ranked wins over Valdosta State and Washburn.

Three student-athletes are ranked in singles by the ITA, as Mario Garoz is 15th, Mario Antonio Marales is 45th, and Bosko Boskovic is 53rd.  In doubles, the duo of Matthew Hewitt and Mario Antonio Marales is 39th, while the pairing of Marco Cinotti and Youssef Elshafei is 50th nationally.

Rhett Rollyson is in his fourth season as the head man at FSC, helping the Mocs to a 53-30 mark, while being named last year's Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Coach of the Year.  Under Rollyson's direction, Florida Southern has reached the NCAA Tournament twice.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Thus far, Embry-Riddle has posted a 7-2 ledger with wins notable wins over Valdosta State, Washburn, and Wingate.

Junior Marc Mail is the No. 46-ranked singles player according to the ITA, collecting a 5-3 mark at the No. 1 position.  The doubles team of Mail and Enrico Rosellini is ranked 30th, while the duo of Joao Morgado and Joshua Nuyts is 46th.

Dave Paschal has been at the helm since the 2005 campaign, leading the Eagles to a 340-112 ledger that included 11 trips to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Tournament, three appearances in the NCAA Tournament, three NAIA Runner-Up finishes, and one NAIA National Championship (2013).  He was a five-time NAIA National Coach of the Year and has earned 19 conference and regional Coach of the Year honors across his time as both the men's and women's head coach.

SCOUTING THE TARS
Rollins comes in as the No. 20-ranked squad in the nation in the most recent ITA Poll, and is 6-1 this year with the lone loss being a 4-3 match against top-ranked Barry University.

On the singles side, Lawson Prather is ranked 24th with a 5-1 ledger at the No. 1 position, while Nico de Giacomo is the No. 69-ranked singles player with a 5-1 mark.

Jay Friedman has been the head coach of the Tars since the 2021-22 campaign, guiding the squad to a 62-29 mark, and two NCAA Tournament appearances.  Friedman earned SSC Coach of the Year honors and ITA South Region Coach of the Year recognition following the 2024 campaign.

SCOUTING THE LIONS
Saint Leo is the No. 16-ranked team in the nation, with a 5-1 record, with the only blemish coming to No. 1-ranked Barry 5-2.  

On the singles side, Jose David Segovia is ranked 28th nationally with a 5-0 mark at the No. 2 position, while Dylan Andrianaly is 30th with a 4-2 record at the top singles flight.  In doubles action, the pairing of David Segovia and Kosai Kato is the No.4-ranked pair in the country, with a 4-1 mark in the No. 1 doubles position.

ITA RANKINGS UPDATE
The ITA released its most recent rankings last Wednesday, March 4.  Last week's poll was the first to include singles and doubles rankings since the fall season.

On the singles side, graduate student Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) is ranked 62nd overall, having yet to lose a singles match this season, while sophomore George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) is the No. 64-ranked singles player.  The duo of Klaus and Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]) is the No. 10-ranked doubles pairing nationally.

As a squad, Wayne State is ranked sixth overall, the highest ranking in program history since the team finished fifth following the 2021-22 campaign.
