Women's Tennis to Face Huskies in First Round of GLIAC Tournament

DETROIT -- The No. 4-seeded Wayne State University women's tennis team is set to begin the GLIAC Tournament against No. 5-seeded Michigan Tech University on Thursday, April 23, at 11:00 AM.  All GLIAC Tournament matches will be played at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.

The winner of the match between the Warriors and MTU will face No. 1-seeded Grand Valley State University on Friday, April 24, at 11:00 AM.  The GLIAC Tournament Championship match will take place on Saturday, April 25.

LAST TIME OUT
The WSU women's tennis squad wrapped its regular season with a 5-2 road loss at Ferris State University.

The Green and Gold earned a pair of wins in singles, as senior Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) captured a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 2 slot to finish with a 7-0 ledger in the league, and freshman Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) posted a 6-4, 6-4 triumph in the third flight.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Wayne State handled business during its regular season tilt with Michigan Tech, defeating the Huskies 7-0.  

MTU opened GLIAC play winning its first three conference matches before faltering in the final four.  The Huskies collected league wins over Saginaw Valley State (5-2), Purdue Northwest (4-3), and Roosevelt (5-2).

Alexandra Nikonenko occupies the No. 1 position for the Huskies, going 8-8 in that slot with a 3-4 conference record.  The doubles pairing of Emily Cojocaru and Caoimhe McDonnell tallied a 10-3 record when playing together, including an 8-3 mark in the No. 2 position.

Head coach Mike Andrews is making his second appearance in the GLIAC Tournament, after helping the Lake Superior State University women's tennis team to the league tournament a year ago.

RANKINGS UPDATES

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its newest team, singles, and doubles rankings.  In singles, Szpakowska checks in as the No. 48-ranked player in the country.  The pairing of Szpakowska and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) is viewed as the No. 39-ranked duo nationally.

The NCAA released its newest regional rankings as well, with the WSU women's tennis team appearing eighth, joined by GLIAC rivals Grand Valley State (first), Ferris State (third), and Davenport (fourth).
