ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's outdoor track and field squad posted the most points ever in program history on day two (112.5) of the championships as well as the most points ever for the championship (150.5) thanks to five event winners on Friday (four individual and the 4x400m relay).
The individual GLIAC Champions were
Nicole Warren (Triple Jump),
Keneisha Thomas (400m Hurdles),
Megan Zahnow (100m Hurdles) and
Avery Wilson (400m dash). Wilson,
Audrey Huizinga,
Hanne Bastiaansen and Thomas were the winning quartet in the 4x400m relay.
Both Bastiaansen and
Emily Gordon totaled 14 points from two individual races which would have placed each of them eighth in the team competition.
The Wayne State coaching staff consisting of
Grant Lofdahl (head coach), Nate Miller (associate head coach),
Celine Freeman-Gibb (assistant coach),
Samantha Miller (graduate assistant coach) and
Makenzie Wellner (graduate assistant coach) was named GLIAC Women's Coaching Staff of the Year.
QUOTING COACH LOFDAHL
"It is hard to put into words everything our team accomplished over the past three days, but suffice it to say that this was the best meet (so far) in the history of Warrior track and field.
"We dealt with some very poor weather conditions — rain on Wednesday, wind on Thursday, snow flurries in the air on Friday, and cold throughout.  While it may have affected times and distances, it did not impact on our athletes' competitive efforts at all.  We broke a number of program records such as 150.5 points scored, but really the key was 23 different people scored for us.  Five more finished ninth or 10th and just missed on scoring points, so in total 28 of our 35 competitors had a top-10 finish.
"
Keneisha Thomas led the charge with 17 points, a win in the 400 hurdles, a PR in the 100 hurdles, and anchored our winning 4x400 relay. Â
Ella Hufnagel destroyed the school record in the heptathlon, and
Avery Wilson became the first Warrior to break 55 seconds in the 400 dash. Â There are too many incredible efforts to list them all, but
Robin Bresolin stood out and earned our Miss Mantra award for the season. Â Competing through injury since the winter, she gutted out a fifth-place finish in the steeplechase on Thursday and came back with a seventh-place run in the 5K on Friday, chopping 34 seconds off her personal best in a race where she was seeded 12th coming in.
"I am incredibly proud of this entire team as student-athletes, and even prouder of who they are as human beings. Â The love and support they have for each other truly made these results possible. Â Our coaches
Nate Miller,
Celine Freeman-Gibb,
Samantha Miller, and
Makenzie Wellner have done a fantastic job and are very deserving of the GLIAC Coaching Staff of the Year award. Â We had an amazing GLIAC meet, and as Coach C said in the post-meet team meeting, 'This is only the beginning!'"
Grand Valley State won the GLIAC title with 245 points, while the Warriors were second with 150.5 points. Trailing WSU were Northern Michigan (113), Parkside (102), Sagianw Valley State (82.5) and Davenport (68) to round out the top six. Finishing seventh through 11th were Purdue Northwest (33), Ferris State (10), Michigan Tech (7), Lake Superior State (4) and Roosevelt (3).
