Men's Tennis to Play Northwood in NCAA Midwest Regional

DETROIT -- The No. 3-seeded Wayne State University men's tennis team will compete against No. 6-seeded Northwood University at 12:30 PM in the opening round of the NCAA Midwest Regional on Monday, May 11, in Big Rapids, Mich.  WSU is making its 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

LAST TIME OUT
The Warriors collected a pair of wins in the GLIAC Tournament en route to a runner-up finish to Ferris State.  The Green and Gold bested Roosevelt 4-1 and Grand Valley State 4-0, before falling 4-3 to FSU.

Prior to the start of the league tournament, multiple WSU student-athletes garnered All-GLIAC honors.  In singles, graduate student Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) and sophomore George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) were named to the first team, while sophomore Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) and freshman Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG - Martigny) received second-team recognition.  On the doubles side, Wayne State's top two pairings of Klaus and Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]) along with Day and Mathys were both named Second Team All-GLIAC.  Freshman Warren Gunnar (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) was tabbed as an honorable mention.

WSU'S NCAA HISTORY
As previously mentioned, the Wayne State men's tennis program will be making its 16th appearance in the big dance, and 10th under the direction of head coach Bryan Morrow.  The distinguished program has posted an 18-15 record in the NCAA Tournament, that includes three regional titles, and an appearance in the 2022 National Championship match.

A year ago, the Warriors battled with Ferris State in the first round, gaining a 3-0 advantage, before the Bulldogs rallied for a 4-3 triumph.

SCOUTING THE TIMBERWOLVES
Northwood has posted an impressive 17-2 ledger this season, collecting a 7-1 mark in the G-MAC during the regular season and capturing the G-MAC Tournament crown.  NU is the No. 30 ranked squad nationally according to the ITA, and are the No. 6-seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional.

Three NU men's tennis student-athletes earned G-MAC All-Conference honors, as Sergio Lopez Guillen and Andrey Pikulin garnered First Team honors, and Marc Ferrando was named to the Second Team.

UP NEXT
The winner of the match between the Timberwolves and the Warriors will face the victor of the contest between No. 2-seed Ferris State and No. 7-seed Drury on Tuesday, May 12 at 10 AM in Big Rapids.
