Szpakowska Named ITA Midwest Senior Player of the Year

DETROIT -- Wayne State University women's tennis senior Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Senior Player of the Year.  The honor is awarded to the top senior or graduate student in each of the eight regions.

This marks the second-straight year that a WSU women's tennis player has earned the award, after Anais Ruyssen garnered it a season ago.

Szpakowska impressed all season long, primarily participating in the No. 1 doubles position and No. 2 singles position.  She tallied a 15-3 mark in singles that included a 10-3 record at the No. 2 slot, along with a 22-4 doubles record, including a 13-2 record at the top slot.  In GLIAC action Szpakowska did not lose a match, going 7-0 in singles and doubles.  Against in-region opponents, Szpakowska posted a strong 11-0 record in singles, and a 13-1 mark in doubles.  The WSU student-athlete earned First Team All-GLIAC honors in singles and doubles.

FROM HEAD COACH YAHSHA THOMPSON
