* BELLARMINE/MARYGROVE STORYLINES
Wayne State began the 2009-10 regular season with a 72-68 setback at Central State last Tuesday.
Saturday's contest against top-ranked Bellarmine will mark the first time in head coach
David Greer's tenure that the home opener has been against a GLVC school.
The Marygrove game will mark the fifth meeting in the last six years between the schools. The Mustangs were WSU's home- opening opponent in 2005, 2007 and 2008.
* CENTRAL STATE RECAP
WSU trailed by 10 (58-48) with 8:45 left and cut the margin to three (68-65) with 99 seconds remaining after a 17-10 run.
Two foul shots by CSU's Gino Smith made it a five-point game until
Ike Udanoh drained a triple from the corner with 46 seconds left.
An offensive foul on CSU gave WSU the ball with 17 seconds remaining, but a last second jumper would not fall.
* HOME OPENER HISTORY
WSU is 8-0 in home openers under head coach
David Greer. The last seven home openers have been non-conference affairs, while Greer's first home opener was a GLIAC contest in 2001 against Saginaw Valley.
The last time the top-ranked Division II squad played in the Matthaei was Jan. 8, 2009, when Findlay defeated the Warriors 92-77.
* ALL-TIME SERIES
Wayne State and Bellarmine are tied at one win apiece after playing a home-and-home series during the 2005-06 campaign. BU won 85-77 on Nov. 19, while WSU claimed a 68-59 win in Detroit on Dec. 29.
The Warriors lead Marygrove 4-0 in the all-time series which began during the 2004-05 season. WSU has scored at least 100 points three times in the series, while allowing an average of 58.5 points per game.
* SCOUTING BELLARMINE
The Knights are 2-0 after wins over Salem International (92-75) and Hillsdale (76-68) last Sunday and Monday.
Four players are averaging in double figures: Jeremy Kendle (17.5), Braydon Hobbs (17.0), Nick Holmes (11.0) and Justin Benedetti (10.0).
* SCOUTING MARYGROVE
The Mustangs are 0-4 after Wednesday's 92-52 loss at Northwood.
Marcus Hopkins leads MC in scoring at 14.8 ppg, while Justin McKinney is at 13.0 ppg.
* ON THE BENCH
David Greer, just the ninth head coach in school history, is in his ninth season at WSU with a 113-109 record. He is the fifth-longest tenured coach in 92 seasons of WSU basketball.
Scott Davenport has compiled a 71-47 mark in his fifth year with the Knights.
MC's Glen Donahue has a 17-43 record in his third year with the Mustangs.
