Men's Basketball Upended at Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team saw its overall record drop to 4-3 with a 61-49 non-conference setback Saturday afternoon at Lewis University.

The Warriors scored six consecutive points after the Flyers got on the scoreboard first.  Juniors Ike Udanoh, Jerry Oden and Bryan Smothers each had buckets for WSU.

An 8-0 for LU was ended when Smothers drained a triple at the 11:18 mark.  The Flyers responded with a 13-2 run over the next 5:30 for a 23-11 lead with 5:52 left.

With the Flyers holding a 25-13 advantage at the 4:21 mark, the Warriors went on a 8-0 run to pull within four at intermission (25-21).

Lewis had four turnovers and missed two field goal attempts in their final six possessions of the first half.

After an offensive rebound and basket by Udanoh on the first possession of the second half, WSU trailed by 2.

Following a three-pointer by senior Bryan Wright that made it 28-26, Lewis had a 15-3 run to pull ahead 43-29. 

With the Flyers leading 46-31at the 12:24 mark, Wayne State responded with an 8-0 run with all eight points being scored by Wright -- two triples sandwiched around a jumper.  LU had a 5-0 run to make it a 12-point game (51-39) and the Warriors were never able to get closer than eight the rest of the way.

Both teams made 19 field goals, with WSU shooting 30 percent compared to 41 percent for Lewis.  Each team also made seven triples with scoring difference coming at the foul line.  The Warriors made 4-of-7, while the Flyers connected on 16-of-22 from the charity stripe.

Udanoh had 13 points to lead WSU, with Wright contributing 11 points. 

Wayne State resumes conference play this week with a pair of home contests.  The Warriors entertain Northern Michigan on Thursday in a game that will be televised throughout the state of Michigan on Comcast Channel 90, and then Michigan Tech will visit the Matthaei for a Saturday afternoon contest.
