Marquette – The Wayne State women's basketball team concluded its trip to the Upper Peninsula Saturday by losing to Northern Michigan 74-59. WSU (1-5, 0-2 GLIAC) could not overcome the Wildcats' nine three-pointers and 50 percent (21-42) shooting from the field.
Three players scored in double figures for the Warriors as senior guard Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) led WSU with 11 points while sophomore guard Felicia Thomas (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) and freshman guard Paige Sickmiller (Washington, Mich./Romeo) chipped in 10 pointes each.
After being held scoreless for the first time this season on Thursday, junior guard Chelsea Kouri (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) finished with nine points as did freshman forward Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood).
Freshman guard Amelia Davis (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) had a team-high six rebounds while scoring seven points. Sophomore guard Kiara Smith (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) handed out two assists to lead WSU.
Wayne State committed just six turnovers against Northern Michigan (4-2, 2-0 GLIAC) while scoring 13 points off of 14 Wildcat mistakes. The Warriors also won the rebounding battle 39-36 which helped lead to 17 second-chance points. However, Wayne State shot just 32 percent (23-71) from the floor and could not keep pace with Northern Michigan.
After being outscored 43-23 in the first half, WSU bounced back with a much improved second half and outscored NMU 36-31 in the final 20 minutes of play. In fact, the Warriors started the period out on a 7-0 run to trim The Wildcats' lead to 11 (43-32).
However, Northern Michigan was then able to build its lead back up to 22 points (72-50) with 3:41 remaining in the regulation. Wayne State ended the game on a 9-2 run. Thomas went 4-7 from the field to lead all players with 10 second half points.
Northern Michigan was led by sophomore forward Hillary Bowling who scored a game-high 15 points.
Wayne State will now travel to play Northwood on Wednesday (Dec. 9) at 6:00 p.m.
