Men's Hoops Falls In Double Overtime

The Wayne State University men's basketball team (4-2 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 94-85 double overtime setback Wednesday evening at Northwood University (4-1 overall, 2-1 GLIAC).

The Warriors led by three at intermission (37-24) despite being called for 15 fouls in the opening 20 minutes compared to eight for the Timberwolves.  WSU shot 45 percent (13-of-29) from the floor in the first half, while NU made 44 percent (7-of-16) of its field goal attempts and 82 percent (18-of-22) from the charity stripe.

Bryan Smothers and Jerry Oden led WSU in the first half with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The second half was a see-saw affair but Timberwolve Dorian Pierce drained a long triple with just 1.7 second left in regulation to knot the game at 64.

The foul differential was only 10-8 with the visiting Warriors still being assessed the larger total in the second half.

The Warriors shot 34 percent (11-of-32) from the floor in the second half and 3-of-5 from the foul line.  Northwood made 42 percent (8-of-19) from the field and 9-of-11 (82 percent) from the charity stripe.

Each team scored 10 points in the first overtime period with Smothers and Oden each scoring four points.

In the second overtime, WSU was only able to make two field goals, while the hosts made five shots from the floor plus 10-of-10 from the foul line.

Oden led WSU with 25 points and seven rebounds, while Smothers contributed 23 points including 14-of-16 from the foul line.  Bryan Wright had 13 points.

Pierce scored a game-high 35 points including an uncontested lay-up in the final seconds to pad his scoring stats.  Lionel Sullivan had a double-double with 30 points and 11 rebounds.

Wayne State concludes its four-game road trip with a non-conference contest at Lewis on Saturday.  Tip-off in Romeoville, Ill. is at 4 p.m. Eastern.
