Northwood Claims 75-39 Victory Over Wayne State

Midland, Mich. – The Wayne State women's basketball team's losing streak extended to three games Wednesday night after a 75-39 loss at Northwood. WSU's record is now 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Northwood improved to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC with the win.

Freshman forward Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) had game-highs of 11 rebounds and three steals to go a long with six points while junior guard Chelsea Kouri (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and sophomore guard Felicia Thomas (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) led the Warriors with 12 points each. Kouri, who connected on three triples against Northwood, also recorded six rebounds.

Freshman guard Amelia Davis (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) made her second start of the season and scored five points including her first three-pointer. Freshman forward Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) grabbed six rebounds in the first half.

While Northwood had its second best shooting day of the season at 44.2 percent (23-52), Wayne State made just 21.9 percent (14-64) of its shots. The turnover and rebounding battles were also won by the Timberwolves 14-18 and 45-39 respectively. Both squads produced six second-chance points.

Crumpton started the game off for the Warriors by converting a pair of free throws to give WSU a 2-0 lead. After a three-pointer by Northwood's Rachel Church, Thomas would make a layup with 14:28 left in the half that gave Wayne State its last lead of the game at 4-3. Northwood answered back with a mini 4-0 run to retake the lead, but a three-pointer by Thomas tied the game at 7-7 with 12:43 to play in the period. 

However, Northwood proceeded to go on a 27-6 run to take a commanding 34-13 lead into the locker room.

Despite shooting at a much better clip in the second half, Wayne State could only get to within 18 points of Northwood early in the second stanza as the Timberwolves pushed its lead to as many as 41 points (71-30) with 4:59 to play. WSU ended the game on a 9-4 run after two three-pointers by Kouri and one by Davis.

Church and Jodi Ostergren scored 17 and 13 points to pace Northwood.

Wayne State will look bounce back at home on Thursday Dec. 17 vs. Northern Michigan at 5:30 p.m.
