Post Game interview With David Greer and Ian Larkin
DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (8-8 overall, 6-6 GLIAC) was not able to sustain its early momentum and fell
57-48 to visiting Grand Valley (14-3 overall, 10-2 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.
The Warriors came out flying on all cylinders and opened up a 21-4 lead with first 9:30 of the contest. Six different WSU players scored with junior
Jerry Oden (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) leading the way with eight points.
A three minute scoreless drought by WSU ended on a ally-oop dunk by freshman
Mike Hollingsworth (Utica, Mich.) which gave the hosts a 23-7 lead with 7:24 left.
GVSU went on a 5-0 run over the next two minutes until a lay-up by Oden.
Wayne State would score just three points in the final five minutes before intermission but the Lakers tallied only five points and trailed the Warriors by 11 (28-17) at the break.
Grand Valley shot just 17.4 percent (4-of-23) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes compared to 50 percent (11-of-22) for WSU.
Wayne State's largest lead of the second half came following the opening possession when junior
Bryan Smothers (Pontiac, Mich./Northern) hit a jumper in the paint for a 30-17 lead (which was also the same lead WSU had late in the first half of Thursday's setback to Ferris State).
A 14-7 run by GVSU pulled the visitors within six (37-31) with 13:38 left. The Warriors responded with back-to-back layups by freshman
Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) for a 10-point advantage at the 12:15 mark.
Wayne State went nearly five minutes without scoring as the Lakers had a 11-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 42-41, on a triple by Alvin Storrs. Senior
Bryan Wright (Warren, Ohio/Harding) hit a three-pointer to temporarily regain the lead.
GVSU's Breland Hogan drained a triple but junior
Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) answered from inside putting the Warriors ahead 46-45 with 6:16 left.
After missed opportunities at both ends of the court, Larkin's offensive rebound and put-back gave WSU a three-point lead (48-45). Storrs' three-pointer knotted the game and, following a WSU miss, Toreau Brown gave GVSU the lead for good on a layup with 3:35 left.
Wayne State did not score in the final 4:35 of the game as the Lakers tallied the final 12 points.
In the tale of two halves, GVSU shot 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the floor in the second half compared to 33.3 percent (9-of-27) for the Warriors.
Two players from each team had a game-high 12 points (Oden and Larkin from WSU, and Brown and Storrs from GVSU). Larkin grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Wayne State had a season-high 20 turnovers, including 14 after halftime.
The Warriors embark on a four-game road swing starting with Thursday's contest at Tiffin.
Notes:
The 17 field goals allowed by the Warrior defense is the fewest by an opponent this year.
The 48 points scored by Wayne State is a season low. Two of the lowest three outputs have come in the past 72 hours.
The Warriors shot a season low 16.7 percent (3-of-18) from beyond the arc.
