Detroit
– The Wayne State women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon and found itself down just four points with less than five minutes to play. However, the Warriors (4-13, 2-10 GLIAC) were unable to upend Grand Valley (14-3, 11-1 GLIAC) as the Lakers held on to defeat WSU 69-61.

Wayne State made nine three-pointers against the Lakers and had a season-high 16 assists on 21-of-52 shooting from the field. Thursday's game was the second consecutive contest that WSU shot over 40 percent from the field in. Wayne State also won the rebounding battle 33-32.

With 12 points senior guard Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) led a balanced Warrior attack that saw five players score at least eight points. Freshman forward Chelsea Davis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem) scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds as well.

Freshman guard Amelia Davis (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) made her fourth start of the season and tallied five points, six rebounds, and a game-high eight assists. Davis' eight assists were a season-best for a WSU player.

On 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc, junior guard Chelsea Kouri (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) scored nine points while adding three assists and freshman forward Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) got in on the action as well with eight points and six rebounds.

The Warriors benefited from a fast start to the game with Chelsea Davis and Brooke Bowers draining three's while sophomore guard Felicia Thomas (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) knocked down her first jumper of the game to give WSU an early 8-4 lead 2:44 into the game.

But the Lakers would show why they are one of the GLIAC's best with a 15-1 run that pushed GVSU out in front 19-9 with 11:12 to play in the half. WSU was able to restart its offense and trade baskets with Grand Valley over the next seven minutes of action as Kouri and freshman guard Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) each scored three points to help keep the deficit at 10 points (29-19).

Chelsea Davis then anchored WSU down the stretch in the first period by scoring six points. Kouri and Amelia Davis each added three-pointers as the Warriors ended the half on a 12-5 spurt and down just three points (34-31).

Chelsea Davis finished the first period with a game-high 11 points. Amelia Davis was credited with an assist on five of WSU's first six buckets.

Crumpton knocked down a jumper on Wayne State's first possession of the second half and followed the make with a put-back on the Warriors next trip down the court to make it just a two point affair. A jumper by Amelia Davis tied the game at 37-37 for the first time since early in the first half.

An 8-0 run by GVSU put the Warriors back in a hole before Wayne State proceeded to score 17 of the game's next 30 points to pull to within four points with 4:11 left in regulation.

However, the Lakers were able to hold onto the victory by making five of their final six foul shots.

Grand Valley was led by center Alex Stelfox who shot 10-for-15 from the floor and scored a game-high 21 points.

Wayne State will be on the road for its next four games starting Thursday (Jan. 28) at Tiffin. Tip-off against the Dragons is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
