Ashland, Ohio – The Wayne State women's basketball team had a halftime lead for the third time this season, but Ashland was able to erase its deficit and go on to defeat the Warriors
67-58 Saturday at Ashland.
Freshman forward
Chelsea Davis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem) had a career day for Wayne State, tallying 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Davis' points and rebounds were game-bests.
Fellow freshman forward
Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) scored a season-high 12 points while also matching
Chelsea Davis' eight rebounds. Also grabbing eight rebounds against Ashland was freshman guard
Amelia Davis (Temperance, Mich./Bedford).
Senior guard
Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) came off the bench for the second time this season and scored 15 points while coming away with five steals. Sophomore guard
Felicia Thomas (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) also added a career-high four steals.
As a team, Wayne State won the rebounding battle 39-29 while forcing 26 turnovers, but shot just 34 percent (23-for-67) and committed 23 turnovers of its own.
WSU's offense came out of the gates flat shooting just 2-for-11 and turning the ball over three times. Despite the lack of offense the Warriors found themselves trailing by only four points (8-4) at the first media timeout.
Bowers checked in and helped ignite the Wayne State offense by scoring five of the team's next eight points as WSU kept its deficit to just four over the next three minutes (16-12).
After a 4:45 WSU scoring drought that let Ashland achieve its largest lead of the half, Wayne State came alive and took off on a two-person 12-2 run to get its first lead of the game. Bowers once again started the spurt with another three-pointer before
Chelsea Davis took over down low by scoring six straight points. A third three-ball by Bowers gave WSU a 24-22 lead and forced an Eagle timeout with 2:11 left to play in the period.
The timeout did little to slow Wayne State down, as Crumpton also got into the scoring act by sinking a long three-pointer deep into the shot clock to give Wayne State a 27-22 lead at halftime.
After the slow start, Wayne State finished the half shooting 8-of-18 and outscoring Ashland 23-14. At the break, WSU had edges in rebounding (20-12) and steals (6-4).
Bowers and Davis led WSU through the first 20 minutes with 11 and 10 points respectively while Crumpton was the only other Warrior to score with six points.
The Warriors continued to find the hoop to begin second half play with Crumpton scoring four more points early on and junior guard
Chelsea Kouri (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) making a three-pointer at the 16:56 mark to become the first player not named Bowers, Crumpton or Davis to score for Wayne State. WSU added to its halftime lead to go up by six points (36-30) heading into the first media timeout of the period.
However, Ashland was able to tie the game at 36-36 and then proceed to go on a 17-7 run to take a 53-43 lead that WSU would never be able to fully recover from. The Eagles' lead did not dip below six points through the final 7:55 of the game. Ashland's comeback win is their fifth victory in six games.
While WSU shutout Lindsay Gaut, Ashland's leading scorer, Micki Kuns and Lacy Romine stepped up to score 18 and 17 points respectively for the Eagles.
Wayne State will be back on the road and going for the season sweep of Saginaw Valley next Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
