After a 15-4 Hillsdale run to begin the game, the Warrior offense was ignited by Smith who scored eight straight points for Wayne State to pull WSU to within nine points at 23-12. Smith showed a little bit of everything in scoring her eight points; she connected on a pair of foul shots, drove to the basket for a layup, put back an offensive rebound and capped it all off with a jumper deep into the shot clock.

In addition to Smith's scoring, WSU made four consecutive defensive stops to force Hillsdale to call a 30 second timeout with 8:04 to play.

The Chargers came out of the timeout and extended its lead back into double digits (32-16) before WSU once again fought back to outscore Hillsdale 14-10 the remainder of the half. The Wayne State run featured three-pointers by sophomore guard Chelsea Kouri (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and freshman guard Tyler Hardy (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) with field goals by Bowers, freshman guard Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) and Smith.

Wayne State and Hillsdale played even through the first media timeout of the second half with WSU holding a slight 8-7 advantage to keep within striking distance at 49-36. Thomas scored four of the Warriors' eight points to begin the period.

However, HC used a 13-5 spurt to go up 23 points and break the game open 64-41. The Chargers kept its lead above 20 points through much of the second half before Tyler Hardy scored four consecutive points to make it an 18-point contest (68-50). The game ended with WSU on an 8-2 run en route to the 70-56 defeat.
