DETROIT - In a battle between the top-two ranked teams in Division II, the Wayne State women's swimming and diving team earned a
189.5-110.5 victory over Grand Valley State in a GLIAC dual meet on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei Aquatic Center. The Warriors have bested the Lakers in dual meets in four of the last five years.
As the program celebrated Senior Day, two of its veterans stood out in the victory, as
Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich./Jenison) and
Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) each won three individual events and together comprised half of a first-place relay.
St. Andrew won the 1000 freestyle (10:38.56), the 200 free (1:56.27) and the 500 free (5:11.51). Hogle finished first in the 200 butterfly (2:07.79), the 100 fly (58.86) - earning an NCAA “B” qualifying time - and the 200 individual medley (2:10.57). The two seniors also joined
Ashley Corriveau (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East) and
Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.) on the 400 free relay (3:37.15) to close out the meet.
Ana Gonzalez Pena (Gijon, Spain) triumphed in both breaststroke events (1:05.55, 2:21.73) and finished second to Hogle in the 200 IM (2:15.03). Corriveau took first in the 50 and 100 freestyle heats (24.74, 53.92), and Franklin led the way in the two backstroke swims, setting a Matthaei pool record in the 100 back (58.86) and posting a time of 2:10.02 in the 200 back.
Other notable swims came from
Stephanie Ekleberry (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale), who came in second in the 1000 free (10:48.55), third in both the 200 free (1:58.54) and 500 free (5:14.80);
Laura Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern), another senior who placed second in the 200 fly (2:12.92) and third in the 100 fly (59.90);
Courtney Roberts (Milan, Mich.) , who finished second to Gonzalez Pena in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.17); and
Alex Malfroid (Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower), who came in third in the 200 back (2:11.82).
The 200 medley relay team of Franklin, Roberts, Gonzalez Pena, and Corriveau won in a time of 1:47.40.
In one-meter diving action, less than 11 points separated the second and fourth place finishers.
Carly Sevald (Royal Oak, Mich./Mercy) took second (254.0),
Cassie Chetosky (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) placed third (246.90) and
Lena Wileczek (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) claimed fourth place (243.05). On the three meter board, Chetosky (280.50) and Sevald (271.65) finished second and third, respectively.
In their final dual meet of the season, the Warriors will face Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 6:00 p.m. in Ypsilanti.
